I had braces for a year. They make your mouth a little bit sore most of the time, as your teeth are being forcibly moved around. Some people feel more pain than others - it's dependant on the reason for having them, how far the teeth need to move, and other factors. A few lucky people rarely have any pain at all. You generally get used to it over time, though, and it feels strange when they finally come off. The spacer is likely to add to it a little bit, but nothing too serious.
As for what you can eat - no gum, taffy, or anything that would stick to the braces (generally anything that would stick to your teeth even just a little is not allowed). You have to be sure to clean underneath them with floss on a daily basis, or bits of food get trapped and you might end up with cavities underneath once they come off.
With regards to color, you get to change them once a month or so, so just pick a color you like and if you want something different, you can change it next time.
If you're worried about it, talk to your orthodontist. S/he can give you all the details. If you're doing it just because your teeth don't look pretty, I wouldn't bother - most places in the world people couldn't care less what your teeth look like, I don't see why it should be any different where you live. If it's because there is a problem with your teeth that needs to be solved, then you should probably do it. It may save you a great deal of pain later in life, and you'll be glad you did. The younger you are when you get them, the easier it is, so if you really need them it's best not to wait.

Braces hurt pretty badly for the first week you get them on. Take Tylenol/Ibuprofen, and use your wax. Eat mostly liquified foods. After that, they rarely hurt. They might when you get your wires tightened, but if you take a painkiller before, you should be fine. My braces never hurt after the first week. During braces, you can eat whatever you want, but it's really hard to chew gum or caramel or things like that. The orthodontist will give you a list of things you can't eat, so you don't need to worry, but if you like carrots or apples, cut them up first, it's a lot easier. You should probably avoid popcorn too, but if you don't mind cleaning your braces out a lot, you can normally get away with that. As to the colors... if you don't want people to notice them, pick silver. If you do, pick your favorite colors, your school colors, or something like that. My friends always got rainbows, but I don't think an 11 year old guy would be too into that. :]]
Good luck!

Sorry to disappoint you, but yes, braces do hurt. They hurt pretty bad for the first few days after you get them, but after that they usually hurt only after they tighten them. On the days that they hurt try eating spaghetti, rice, or soup (or anything else that's soft). I have had mine for almost 3 years and I'm only 12. (I've had them since the end of 4th grade!) but mine should be ready to come off really soon. Good luck with your braces and I hope they are almost pain-free! :)

well back in the day braces only came in silver, so any color would be nice. As for the pain. I felt it was only bad when they tightened them. On those days I would eat soft food, like soup and yougurt. Don't freak out, it isn't bad. Just remember to take care of them(no gum, hard chewy things) Good luck and happy teeth ( I had mine for 6 years)

Just don't get those colored rubber bands! Braces only hurt a few days after you get them, or about a day after you get them tightened. Its your gums that are tender so you can't eat much unless its soft. They don't always hurt though and is well worth it to live the rest of your life with a nice smile!

i had them, and they only hurt when they are tightened once a month for a day or so, but in general they do not hurt, and make all the difference in appearance and the health of teeth....why are you not in school if you are 11??

They can be a bit sore for a few days everytime you get them tightened but its not too bad. Also, the insides of your lips can sometimes get irritated from them.
However, having straight beautiful teeth outweigh all of that I think.
