Depends on where you are. In Oklahoma you have 30 days to register the car. Insurance must be purchased before the car is driven, but if you already have a policy in place on another vehicle, you will be covered for a few days. A finance company will not let you take possession of the car until THEY have proof of insurance.
Call the DMV in your state and ask. They won't yell at you, or anything. And you should get a better answer than on Y/A.

The previous owner had insurance coverage on the car so you can leave with the car and not have bought insurance yet. They will sign the title over to you in your name. Unless they go down to the DMV, it will appear as if the car is still in their name. You will get a temporary tag on your car which is good for up to thirty days. By this time, you will need to have insurance on the car so you can get a permanent tag and registration.

Imagine you have an accident and kill 27 children, 19 sheep and a deer. Who pays for the mess? Is this another UK person or are you just a kid?
