Is it true that drinking milk can cause leg cramps? Or is it simply caused by bad circulation?

I get leg cramps while I sleep if I have been wearing shoes with a high heel. I also get them after working out to much. Potassium and poor circulation can be causes but if you are a healthy adult that is usually not the case. Potassium levels generally do not drop enough to cause leg cramps unless on certain medicines.

My favorite cure for leg cramps. Lay in bed on your back and pull your toes towards your head stretching your calf muscles. Repeat this several times and if this doesn't help, get up and walk around.

If leg cramps continue to be a problem then you need to see your Dr. a simple blood test can determine many causes.

Leg cramps aren't caused by drinking milk. It may not be poor circulation either. Be sure you get enough calcium and potassium in your diet. The doctor prescribed Quinine sulfate for me and it worked great. However, my insurance has stopped paying for it. I bought some Tonic Water (diet) because it has quinine in it. It's just so bitter I can't stand to drink the stuff. So I'm eating a lot of oranges, bananas, baked potatoes and English peas to get the potassium I need.

As far as I know it's your body telling you you need more potassium. I get very severe leg and foot cramps and the doctors have always given me this answer. I think I remember calcium having something to do with the absorption of potassium, but I do not think drinking milk will cause leg cramps.

Milk won't cause it. If you have leg cramps, buy some diorylite from the chemist as it contains the salts that you're probably lacking, do this once or twice and you should be fine. If you can't get that make just ask for rehydration salts (You mix it with water)

People who sweat a lot can get this or in very hot countries. (You lose body salts in your sweat)

Hope that helps.

The classical answer is to increase your potassium intake with, for example, bananas, oranges or orange juice, grapes, etc.
