British friends, I read a lot of Ian Rankin novels and watch a lot of British mysteries and such and people are always talking about a "full breakfast" or a "proper breakfast." What makes up a full English breakfast - I might like to make one for myself!

I think the hash browns are a later addition, probably from the States. When I was a kid (and before I was veggie!) a full English breakfast was:

2 sausages
2 rashers of bacon
2 fried eggs (or sometimes scrambled)
Baked beans
Grilled tomatoes
Grilled or fried mushrooms
Black pudding
Toast
Tea or coffee
Fruit juice

Bacon, Eggs, Fried Bread, Fried Tomato, Fried Mushroom, Black Pudding, Sausage, Baked Beans,
Tea/Coffee

Less Comonly
Hashbrowns, White Pudding, sautéd potatoes, Onion rings, Bubble and squeak or chips.

Oh and dont forget to follow it up with a nice heart attack to let you know your boddy isn't wasting all that grease. And for typical greasy spoon patrons a copy of the sun and a superking/sovreign cigarette.
Oh and none of that fancy tea and coffee propper stuff thats been brewed for hours and can taste like week old sports socks with full fat milk. Good for slurping :)

I'm from the east end (London) next to a greasy spoon cafe and have had many many full english breakfasts in my time and have been brought up on them.

After working in an Irish/English restaurant for 3 years and serving this a million times a day I can confidently answer this question! Ours came with fried eggs, bangers ( Irish sausage ) black pudding (blood sausage) white pudding (pork sausage) Irish bacon, which is kinda like a little piece of ham, grilled mushrooms, diced potatoes, and of course soda bread. WOW.....that was a mouth full!! Oh, I forgot the fried tomato and baked beans....

It's just a British Version of a Denny's Grand Slam LumberJack Breakfast........fried, greasy everything.....a heart attack on a plate......and blood sausage sounds sooooooooooooo revolting for the first meal of the day......

i was in England a few month ago and the full English breakfast refers to: toast, eggs, hash browns, bacon or sausage and beans, orange juice or coffee. To tell you the truth i didn't really like it. I felt it's quite greasy!!

I stayed in London 2 years ago and the hotel had a buffet set up that included: fresh fruit, toast, tea, broiled tomato, cheeses, baked beans, sausages, bacon and fresh eggs. They also had muffins and cereal.

Let me see... I am not British, but I lived there for a few years.
I remember when I ordered it at a restaurant I got the following:

A runny egg
A slice of tomato
A link or two of sausage
Sauteed whole mushrooms
A scoop of beans
Some toast

It was pretty gross - especially the egg. It was barely cooked at all.

When i was in England last summer, we were served: toast, eggs, hash browns, a broiled tomato, bacon or sausage and beans. We also had coffee or tea, and maybe juice. Yum!
