I have major pain consitent with sciatic nerve pain (never officially diagnosed but consistent with all the symptomes). Pain is starting to ruin my life. I cant do any of the activities i formerly injoyed, If i sneeze it will bring tears to my eyes its that bad at times, I havent slept 8 continuous hours in 6 months.I have taken every otc drug, heat pack, cold pack, exercise, etc. I even taken vicodin percocet oxycodone. The only thing that relieves the pain semi-effectively is the oxycodone. I am 36 yrs old and I never taken a drug to get high in my life nor intend to sell em as I read about all the time. I dont have a "family " dr and havent been to one in over ten yrs., How do I ask a Dr. for a script without coming off as a junkee, abuser, etc. ??

Probably won't have to ask for a script...make an appointment with a dr. Let them diagnose your problem, they will prescribe what is best for you without your having to ask. I'm more than certain you will have to go through a series of tests...X-rays, etc. You may need to ask for "something to take the edge off" while you wait for the results of the tests....If it's a newly diagnosed problem...there would be absolutely no reason that your doctor would think your a junkie, especially if you've been living with this pain for as long as you have, and haven't done anything about it. Don't put it off though....letting it go may lead to more serious permanant damage. Good Luck!

I would explain to him or her that you were in so much pain that you took some of a friends medication and it did relieve the pain. Tell the doctor about the fact that you can't sleep or function and you just need some kind of relieve so your body can relax. After that all you can do is hope he realizes your not a junkee but an honest person.
The doctors have to be very careful now - a- days because of so many people who do use them to get high.
good luck!

Tell them exactly what you just said!! I believe you aren't a junkie, sometimes some pain killers work and other don't! A doctor should understand that!! Some doctors are weird about writing out prescriptions like that and others hand the scripts out like candy and stickers! If one doc thinks for some reason your just wanting to sell the drugs or something, go to one the can see your really in pain and need it.

How do you know that oxycodone relieves the pain if you haven't been to a doctor in over 10 years? You've taken vicodin and percocet too? You must be getting it from somewhere without a perscription then, or you are emergency room hopping. I'm sorry to tell you, but you sound like an abuser. I would suggest rehab. If you need additional medication, they can take care of that in rehab.

One thing you have done wrong is not been to the doctor. No doctor in there right mind is going to hand you a prescription of narcotics with nothing to go on.
How did you get your pills if you did not go to the streets to buy them? You also just might be addicted to these drugs. You can see my hesitation here. I have heard all sorts of stories from people who just needed just one of my drugs, "oh please you can give me just one, you have plenty". We have even been ripped off by those who thought they needed our drugs more then I did (or my son who has prescribed medications).

If your pain is this bad why on earth have you not been to a doctor? If you really do have this much pain how have you been functioning? Working paying the bills?

When you go to your doctor do not even ask for narcotics. Get checked out get your blood work done. The doctor will make the decision if you need narcotics or not. If you walk in and say "I want oxycodone" he is going to look at you as if you are a drug addict looking for a fix.

I hate going to new doctors and/or when my pharmacist is on vacation. I have RA and have been dealing with many different diagnoses of arthritis's for well over 20 years. My teeth are almost gone from grinding them when sleeping, as well as when I am awake due to trying to not think of the pain in other places in my body. My fingers and toes are starting to deform. Like you I have used many different kinds of pain killers, some made me go into seizures, throwing up, have nightmares, etc. I have written documentation on everything, or went to the doctor and told them.

Since you have been reading up you also know about the inflammatory that help with the pain as well as braises etc. One has to use everything with the pain killers. One does not need to use pain killers all by themselves therefor not need so many when diet and these other things are used all together. There are also non addictive pain killers, which the doctor might give you at first.

You need to start your paper trail. You are 36 not to late. Make sure everything is documented. Do not expect the doctor to fix you up right away. Still go to the doctor. Go buy your drug where ever you have been getting them so you are not going to beg the doctor. I have been in doctors offices before when someone was in to get there fix and even heard one doctor talking about the guy to the nurse.
Find someone like a councilor etc to help cope with the other problems chronic pain brings on if you do not have family member who helps out. Or if they feel it is the best thing for you.
Reading a web site and saying that is what I have is a no go. Go to the doctor! Get diagnosed then people in the medical community will listen to you, otherwise they will think you are just another junkie.
Good luck and do go to the doctors (I hate going to doctors!)

You need to go see a doctor!! Ask a friend for a recommendation for a family practitioner, and make an appointment. Tell the doctor what you wrote here, and he/she will decide which pain meds to prescribe. Do you have a good friend that could come with you? If you could see the doctor with one of his regular patients (maybe the friend that could recommend the doctor), I am sure the doctor will believe that you aren't a junkie. Good luck!!

If you in as much pain as you said you need to suck up your male pride and go see a doctor go to a medical clinic if you have to just get help. I won't care if I was in pain like that. I won't take a chance. That's why the doctors are there for. Just go and see one and explain your pain and get some help or you'll go on and suffer.

You start by scheduling an appointment with a specialist in spinal disorders, usually an osteopath, have him check you out, tell him your symptoms, and what has worked for you to help the pain. Be sure to tell him how long you have been dealing with it, and what may have caused it to begin. Then, you let him decide what you need to deal with the pain.
