I'm a Christian but I don't understand why, in Genesis, after Adam and Eve had sinned and were hiding, when God came into the garden, He asked them where they were. Why did He have to ask? If He already knew, why did he ask them where they were?

Incarnadin, your answer is precisely why I asked for Christian answers. I don't need your nonsense about it never happening. It did happen.

He was waiting for Adam to talk to Him openly and honestly as they had been doing from the time He created man....they would fellowship together in the garden of Eden; God knew that rapport had been severed now, and was waiting for Adam's admission of guilt.
(What did he do, btw....blamed it on his wife)....."The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat". Genesis 3:12
Way to take responsibility ADAM!!!
Every ladies DREAM man....lol

For the same reason a parent will ask a child "who made this mess in here" when the parent already knows the child made the mess. God wanted Adam and Eve to own up to what they had done. They were hiding because they knew they had done something wrong.

You take it too literally .Where are you why have you turned from me?Has the thing I dreaded most for you happened? It's like when you ask a child a question and you know the answer, like why did you do this?or who did this? The point is God felt a disconnect from his creation because when they sinned they became spiritually separated from God.When you betray someone you no longer look like the person you were before the betrayal. You are different and your sin shows. To sin causes death, the death of your soul,it dies a little each time we sin and each time we do God probably says to us,where are you?what have you done?

I've always thought that the real question was more about "where are you in our relationship?" than a geographical question. Most of us know the feeling we get when we have sinned. We feel distanced from God. The picture is of God creating an opportunity for Adam to come clean and confess his straying ways. Instead, he chose to blame Eve, who chose to blame the serpent, which actually was blaming God himself. (That woman YOU gave me, That serpent YOU created) And the rest is history.

Go find a Christian Yahoo if you only want Christians to interact with your questions. I'm offended at your prejudice and discrimination. Just because I'm not of the same faith as you are? People like you shouldn't use general websites and try to turn them into your own little clubs.
And this whole little Adam and Eve, Eden thing NEVER HAPPENED. It's a myth just like Greek and Roman mythology. In the future kids will study the christian mythology in school and not comprehend how people actually believed it all.

God gives rhetorical questions? See Ex 4:11; Job 38.

To see if they'd come clean on their own. I think it would help if you thought of God more relationally. When your parents know you did something wrong, they will often give you such an opportunity. It shows that God wasn't being brutal. He was trying to approach the conflict lovingly. He also had follow up questions. If you just comfront someone with what you already know, you don't leave it as open for follow ups like, "who told you that you were naked?"

you must be a literalist.
the bible is full of man-made stories. they are to make you think, or to impose a certain teaching or belief of the time. that particular message was that Adam & Eve were hiding because they were ashamed. God asking where they were was to reiterate that they were hiding. Also, to show that humans are like children, and God is like the father.

He was testing them!
He knew what they had done, but He wanted to see what Adam would do.
Sort of like mothers, they know what their children have done, but they don't confront the child first, they want the child to admit what they did... come clean... without being asked.

Excellent question. Ive asked this myself. I was given BS answers...
You are going to be told that God was "treating them like a child caught reaching into the cookie jar. As a parent, you might KNOW what your child is doing, but you are still going to ask and give them the opportunity to be honest."
the problem I have withh this response is that the Responder is placing a HUMAN QUALITY on God - and whenver an atheist attempts to ask a question regarding God, we are told we are placing a human quality on him when we shouldnt be....
