I noticed a lot of people get their spelling criticised on answers, and are told to use spell check. However, unless you have some idea how the word is spelt, the checker won't pick it up and correct you.
I would much rather someone go ahead and ask the question, with spelling mistakes, than make them feel intimidated by the remarks and stay away.
The more they ask questions the better their spelling will get.
What's more, I'm not being a patronising c*w!
QUESTION, should we point out spelling mistakes?

If you do not know how to spell a word, there is something called a dictionary which you can look it up in. There is also a dictionary on every computer plus the spell check here on answers. If you say a word out loud phonetically and then spell it the same way that you speak it, the spell check will recognise it.
Whether English is your first language or you are a foreigner learning to speak it, spelling is very important, a wrong spelling can completely change the meaning of a word and the whole sentence.

No!!!
I have had to odd spelling mistake pointed out, which I felt was totally unnecessary, the question was quite clear at the time. I thought this was extremely rude & dis respectful.
Would they point out your lack of correct English to your face, I think not!
There are some questions that are totally incoherent, especially if TEXT short hand is used, this I do feel is somewhat annoying not to say lazy, there is NO need for this.
All our children go to school to learn to read and write English.
When you think of the poor little children that go through hell and back to get some form of education in the third world, laziness like that is inforgivable to me.
Bit like if you dont eat your dinner some child in the world with die of hunger I know. But Good Question : Thank you.

That's true. spelling should not really matter so much for as long as the sentence is understandable. This is not an English class nor a site exclusive to English speakers. A lot of users are from countries whose first or national language may not be English. I think Answers was created as a venue for exchanging ideas, knowledge and opinion, not to check ones spelling or grammar. Although, I would also say that spelling and grammar is important but not to the point of ridiculing or offending those who are not adept in it.

I think I've pointed them out a few times. I think I do it if the person has a superior attitude in the question. If you're going to take a superior attitude, you should at least beable to spell. Other than that - I just let it be. As long as I can understand what they are asking- the content is really the most important.

I think Yahoo should put all the questions through a spell-checker filter, so when the questions get to the page, they're all grammatically correct. They may all be spelt the American way, but at least you could still understand them!!!

That relies upon on the blunders and the position it has known and a variety of of alternative factors. for instance if the blunders transformations the that technique of the sentence to the quantity that it negates what one intends to assert, then that's a public service. extraordinarily if the blunders looks in a information service, on a public internet website that has as its objective to help human beings discover solutions, the position to discover something, the thanks to pay taxes or save money legally to get a tax refund. there are countless circumstances at the same time as it turns right into a public service. If the blunders is clearly an uncomplicated typo and makes no genuine distinction to the objective or motive, it probable turns into basically self aggrandizing to make a correction. if so obviously that's purely self serving.

Yes. Way too many people skate by in life and their horrid spelling SHOULD have been corrected in grade school. It is very difficult to read a question full of spelling errors and incorrect punctuation. People can only have better lives if they learn to communicate properly with others.

I think we should point them out, but be respectful about it. It usually comes off as an attitude from most people. If it were to come across as informative, then people would not get offended. I see nothing wrong with helping someone out for the future - that's what "Answers" is all about anyway, right?
