From where I live in Epsom Surrey, if the night sky is clear I can often see 10-20 aircraft flying overhead at any one time, a few of them are preparing to land at Heathrow, but most of them seem to be flying at a greater height as they make their way to other destinations.
So does anybody know how many planes are flying over the UK at any one time?

I know we have thousands of aircraft in the air at any given time in the US (except for late night/small hours in the morning) so, given the different in sizes of the two countries, one could expect hundreds over the UK. Three thousand seem a lot for a small island country while 30 is a rediculously low number (there're that many over Heathrow airport alone).
