I don't think your question should be "why hire a babysitter". Children need supervision. Find a new babysitter, a better one. Install a Nanny cam or confront your current babysitter.

depending on the age of the kids depends on how much involvement the baby sitter should be having if they are younger lets say under 10 she should really be involved with them in games watching movies or crafts and if they are under 5 they really should all ways be in the room with her and she should be playing with them over 10 she should be monitoring what they are doing but maybe only changing it if she knows the rules of the home are being broken or if she is unsure if the behavior should be allowed she should still check on them a lot and have a good idea what they are doing but if sitting on the couch and having no clue what is going on is all she is doing then a new babysitter is needed!

I would get a new baby sitter dont get so frustrated that you leave the kids alone though. That is not only against the law(depending on their ages) but can be very dangerous, if there is an emergancy.

If you think she is actually not working, you should fire her because she is not only not earning the paycheck, but being careless whit your kids. And if she is paying some attention to the kids maybe she just gets bored when they are playing or sleeping or something, then she should ask you if she can do something Else "while being in the same room with the kids", like watch TV, read..etc. But if the kids are hungry or need anything she haves to stop whatever she is doing and take care of them.

You are the boss and the parent, therefore you would need to take control of this situation and speak to her, or him firmly and evey day mention it is very important the kids get fed, and receive the right attention (in a nutshell) let her know how important this is to you, otherwise you need to find someone else who is more concsientious about their job and who would take it seriously, by law if your child or children are under 18 you cannot leave them alone in the house, while you are away working . Be firm and always know who you have in your home to lead and take care of your children. Can't have carelss persons, they are getting paid to do their job.
Best wishes,

If there is a break-in, loud noise, fire, etc. it is always good to have a babysitter around even if it might seem like they are "doing nothing" If you are being hard on your babysitter of course they are not going to want to play with you.

You have the wrong babysitter!
Hire another babysitter; children should be supervised. Never leave them alone unless you want to be arrested.
