Linux O/S is similar (Based on) Unix which is a Command Prompt based O/S, kinda like DOS before Windows came out.
That being said Linux/Unix is much more powerful than DOS ever was.
Linux differs from Windows in a couple of major ways.
first - less operating overhead than Windows, means Linux will run Faster and better on equivalent hardware.
second - Virus proof, Hackers don't build viruses for Linux/Unix because they can't, so it is more stable/secure than Windows.
Third - Linux can be acquired as open source (Free) and there are many different flavours (Versions) of Linux.

Linux is an OPEN SOURCE operating source & is available for free to download. The main differences also include the possibility that the LINUX OS is completely free to develop & modify coz it's source code is available free of cost for potential developers & students for study purpose. Accounting to it's possibilities for development, it can be highly customized & modified to suit particular needs of a general use for different purposes like buisness, research, education etc. All this high customizability is not available for windows OS
I think that explains a lot about the general difference b/w Windows & LINUX operating systems....

Well, like any type of programming it's just a different way of solving the solution. You can look for screen shots on the internet.
There are loads of versions of Linux, just need to find the right one to meet your purpose.
But Linux is free and aslong as you have your Windows CD that came with your computer, and back up your data you can't really mess up.

Hello,
the major difference is that Linux is free software license under
GNU. This mean that you can get, distribute and modify the soft-
ware. Under Linux OS once understand a Linux distribution like
Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com ) a easy to use distribution or
Gentoo ( http://www.gentoo.org ) a maximise configure able
system. Have a look at http://lwn.net/Distributions/ .
To see a demo you may go to http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download?action=show&redirect=download
Follow the instructions on this site and at the end you have
your demo.

well they are very different in the case that linux can be free depending upon what kind of user you are then im sure there is a version for you. i.e mandrake is a beginners version.
There is also another version which runs off a cd so you can try it before commiting to a similar linux enviroment.
As for windows, it is a more common enviroment for beginner users and is alot easyier to setup and install new software compared to linux.
a tip for linux is a software package called openoffice, a free version of office :) very good

Linux is free, some versions arent but the free ones are just as good, if not better.
it is more secure as most viruses are written for windows, it is more suited for use on servers than wiondows is.
however it is not the best choice if you like all your windows apps and games as most will not work.
