Well, you can base it on the date, tho chances are it's still edible for a while after, so you can either wait until you see mold on it (way yucky!) or when it starts to separate.

Does it not have a best before date on the carton?

Smell it - or taste it. Or look at the Use By date.

gone off where? no,seriously i always check the date on the package.sometimes you can't go by smelling.When in doubt,throw it out!!

check the bb date and it will taste very bitter if it is off

will smell nasty (you'll know it when it smells bad). And will have a very bad sharp taste
