You can stay out for a year, but not a day longer. Even if you are away for a shorter time, CBP might have a lot of questions when you return; you will have to convince them that you still are resident in the US.

No longer than 9 months. They will confiscate your greencard upon your re-entry into the US if you go past that length of time.
