First - do you like the carpeting or are you stuck with it and need to work around it? If that is the case I would buy an area rug that has burgandy in it but has other colors in it as well so I could pull ideas from it. If an area rug is not possible than I would go to a fabric store and look at fabric with that burgandy in it and bring a sample home. Look at the different colors that are in the pattern of the fabric. Pull the paint color from there. If it works in fabric it'll work in your room. The trick is to accessorize with accent colors.
Secondly - The color of the couch should not be pulled from the carpet. The couch, if you purchase smartly will out live the carpet. Couches can be slipcovered to help match the decor. The key to couches is to buy a couch that is great quality and built well.
The main thing to keep in mind what kind of dramam do you want your room to have. With the dark carpet and dark wall paint a room can get dreary fast, even depressing unless you can pull it off romantically with great accents and lighting. Using a lighter brighter color could help keep the feeling of the walls closing in at bay.
Remember that you're the one who has to live with it. Take your time. Have fun with it.

I'd go for a wall treatment, maybe half the wall burgandy or a sponge effect with burgandy (home depot has great pamphlets on this in the paint isle) then the top a beige with a border in the middle to bring it together or even a strip of molding. If you use a border you can pull more color options out of that for a couch color. there are a bunch of borders that have burgandy, beige and hunter green together.

With a dark colored carpet, I would go with a lighter color for the walls to make the room look bigger and brighter, even a pale creamy yellow would do, or just plain white. As far as sofas, I like dark colors for furniture because it hides stains and such. however, too dark will darken the room and seem heavy. I would recommend a khaki or lighter brown color. It will compliment the burgundy while bringing a lightness to the sofas. hope this helps.

Neutral tones.
Like beige walls and a soft cream sofa with accet pillows in rich tones. Like deep blues to offset the burgandy.

Definetly light colors like cream for the walls and sofa in a mix of medium to light colors..something to break up all that dark carpet.
