Any advice as to how to break a young child from the sippy cup? He thinks he needs the cup constantly and I told him he is a big boy and can drink like a big kid. But he is still head strong on the idea.

before he goes to be at night collect all of his sippy cups and put them in a gift bag. Let him tie the bag to a tree branch outside and tell him that the sippy cup fairy will come tonight. When he awakes in the morning take him to that very tree will he will find a new bag filled with big boy cups from the sippy cup fairy!!!

First tell him that he is a big boy now, and try giving him a cup possibly with his favorite Disney character etc.
If he does not like that idea, then try giving him his sippy cup, with a little bit of a certain drink that he dislikes, while you drink out of the cup that you want him to start drinking out of, in front of him.
Most likely he wont want to drink out of those cups if you put the nasty liquid in a few times.

Now you could just let him give it up on his own, he eventually will, some children think of it as something soothing.
And their only kids once ;).
Good luck to you :).

i wager that all of us had there own opinion in this. I took my daughter off of the bottle even as she become between 8 and 9 months previous and positioned her on a sippy cup. Pacifier, become out about 11 months. She nonetheless beverages out of a sippy cup, yet provided that we are contained in the vehicle. I dont imagine that taking this stuff remote from a baby is going to cause them to have undesirable conduct.

Take all the sippy cups and put in a box and throw it away. Then when he asks for a sippy cup tell him if he can find one in the kitchen then he can have it. I know it is mean but it worked for my daughter.

Well to me it sounds like he is using it for comfort more than liquid. If that is his safety thing then you may be better off leaving well enough alone. Provided that all you are giving him is water I don't see what the problem it, it shouldn't effect his teeth (particularly the hard spouted ones, the soft spouted ones can be more bottle like and be carried in the mouth all the time and unlike bottles they aren't designed by dentists for long term use.

Just try to give him regular cups at meals with milk/juice in it and keep the sippy cup for water only. But as it sounds like it is his "security blanket" it is probably best to leave well enough alone.

Give it time. Not all circles fit into squares. Your child may be using it as security. Maybe start at the dinner table with a regular cup or if you see him put it down to play with a toy, sneak it away from him. Just do it in baby steps and he'll catch on. but don't force it, there may be reason that he want to keep it with him all the time. Don't worry to much about until he's getting ready for kindergarten then I would push it.

I'm not sure. You could tell him that it's more rewarding if he'd give it up and use a big cup. Maybe try bribing him a little bit. You didn't mention how old he is but kids general quit using sippy cups at different ages. I don't have children of my own but I remeber when I baby sat my niece and nephew they stopped using them at a very early age. Don't worry about it he'll give it up. Just don't push him.

try using a "big boy' cup and putting a straw in it.better yet get him his own twisty straw and when he's good let him use it. soon enough he'll be so obsessed with being good for the twisty straw that he'll forget about the sippy cup and you can just hide it. ; )

don't put the lid on the sippy cup anymore just say it's lost. He'll get the picture.
