Absolutely No benefit.
If you had a HDTV and a regular DVD player - you will see a benefit, as the picture can be displayed in progressive mode - which makes it much more better looking than on a regular TV.
With a HD DVD player - there is nothing it can do to augment the picture to feed into a standard TV. The HD/Blu-Ray DVD players are essentially computers, and they have a lag time starting up too compared to a regular DVD player. That would be a downside rather than a benefit for your situation.
Upgrade to a HD TV - the prices are dropping sharply!!!

BluRay and HD DVD offer more than just stunning video and crystal-clear audio, they offer more content than ever before. Because of the way these players work, they can hold much more information than any DVD or CD ever could. What does this mean for you? More special features, different camera angles, and much greater interactivity. Also, with HDTV becoming more prevalent as the days go by, being prepared for the future now is a great step. Beware though, just like the Beta and VHS war of the 80's, one format will reign supreme. DVD's will still be around for a long time, so waiting around to see which format wins, and also for the price of the players to go down wouldn't be a bad idea.

The only benefit would be if you had an HD-DVD burner, as you could fit much more standard definition video on an HD DVD versus a standard DVD (over 4 times as much). There are even 30Gb HD-DVD roms that could hold about 8 hours of HD video so its possible in the future there will be HD DVDs out that take advantage of this and although you couldn't see an HD picture on a standard TV set, you could see much longer videos on a single disc. Imagine how many MP3's you could slap onto a single 30Gb disc, or Divx movies if your HD DVD player supported that! Of course as mentioned before, one heck of a lot of SD video will fit on a 15Gb, 20Gb or 30Gb HD-DVD.
The next answerer makes a good point of only one format "reigning supreme". I believe the HD DVD and BluRay formats are incomparable to VHS and Beta. Why? Because you could never play a Beta tape in a VHS machine or vice versa. While this may be true at the moment with BluRay and HD-DVD, later this year the first dual format HD-DVD/BluRay player will be out. Soon I believe all players will be dual format which besides the point of you not having an HDTV at the moment is probably a good reason to hold off on buying such a player right now. Also, there are now DVD movies called Total DVD's which are standard DVD, BluRay and HD-DVD all on one disc so that they are universal.

Nothing. It's a waste of money getting a HD-DVD player. If you want HD quality you need an HDTV.
