Well, I've heard the word 'ignorant' used in a context of coming across as rude and overbearing. In that case, I, as a Christian, must confess that some of my coreligionists may be guilty of seeming that way--and, by the same token, so do some atheists.
When it comes to matters of faith, there seems to be no sort of middle ground--you either believe, or you don't. Personally, I feel it takes as much faith to accept some of the explanations science offers as it does to believe in God.
Besides, as I've said over and over, if one believes, no explanation is necessary, and if one doesn't believe, no explanation will be satisfactory.

The Fox News tactic... disguise an insult as a question. How expected. This entire question is shallow, pedantic, and riddled with insecurity.
"Many atheists claim that science is the only yardstick for measuring what is real."
...that's because it is, skippy. You can't do that with religion or the supernatural. If you can think of any other method to determine what is real in this world and what is not, then you'll earn a Nobel Prize.
"They confidently assert that if science can't prove God exists, then God simply can't exist; end of story."
It's not just science, either. Logic comes into play as well... in the way that "God" is defined by human logic, it blinks itself out of existence.
"Such people then assert they are "atheist,""
Yes... I assert that I do not have a belief in a god. You have a problem with that, skippy?
"...apparently without a clue as to how exponentially more ignorant and stupid such an assertion is..."
Well, skippy, if it's so ignorant and stupid to assert that you don't believe in a god, I would think that you would be able to demonstrate why. You can't. So retract your statement or shut up.
"Consider: The very "mechanisms" science uses to "prove" things, concepts like consciousness, the validity of thought, personal experience, reality, the origin of the universe itself— haven't been proven..."
Uh, yes. They have. That's why we use them. Personal experiene isn't "proof" of anything, it's subjective... which only shows me that you know little to nothing of what you speak of about both science and atheism. Why such hatred towards science? It's because of science that you are able to type out all this bullshit.
"Science can't "prove" ANY OF THEM ARE MATERIAL, let alone explain them factually. "
Science is not ATTEMPTING to prove any of them are material.
"So what is it then, that Atheists use to correctly determine they're right to accept the idea there is no Creator? No God?"
Lack of evidence. If you can present the evidence that your god exists, then by all means, skippy, do it.
Until then, I suggest you revert back to a more primitive way of life before you start criticizing science again.

People are free to believe what they want so long as it doesn't infringe on their rights. to begrudge someone for their faith, without provocation, is the epitome of rude and callous effrontery. Having that said, we are all ignorant. We cannot possible know the existence of god anymore than the atheist asserts there isn't a God.
I find atheists to be less conscientious in social settings and relationships due to there indifference. However, we cannot put a marker on this.
To the commenter who posited that more educated people are atheists, There is a difference between intelligence and education. A person with an IQ of 130 may only hold a HS diploma, whereas a person with an IQ of 100 can hold a college degree. So education is not the most reliable factor in discerning who is right. It all depends on where you acquire your information.

That's why I'm agnostic. Science has proved wrong all the major religions. I'm sure you've read the bible right? I'm sure you've found numurous contradictions, yet still ignore them. You only pick what sounds good and ignore the hatefull stuff god did in the old testiment.
You are right, there is a possibility that "A God" (not the christian one, because obviously the base of christianity is the bible)could be real, but there is a possibility that a god isn't real as well. Think about it, if god actually wanted to write a book or at least let it be translated, wouldn't he want it to be perfect?
How would that make Atheists "More" Ignorant, that would simply make them "as ignorant" as Christians.
-You should take some College science classes.

If you're a Christian, then you're not really helping your cause. The things you're saying about atheists are very ignorant. Firstly atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods, not the belief that they don't exist. Secondly I've never heard an atheist claim that something can't exist if science can't prove it does. That's completely illogical, as it would mean that things like electricity, gravity and so on didn't exist until they were discovered by people.
And finally your logic is just as flawed as the logic you attribute to atheists. You're saying that a positive belief that a god exists is less ignorant than a belief that one doesn't, only because the latter cannot be proved.

I'm an agnostic. I don't really believe in the Christian God (or the god of any others superstition aka religion), but I do think it's possible (not probable, but still possible) that we were created by some kind of superior entity or unseen force. If that were the case, I doubt it would actually care about us anymore than a man would care about a strain of bacteria he created in a lab.
I think anyone who claims they have an exculisve on the truth is full of dung. There's just not enough evidence either way. So for now, just sit back and enjoy the party.

Um, science has never attempted to prove that consciousness or personal experiences are 'material'. They have however explained the nature of those things quite well. 'The validity of thought'? Whatever do you mean?
What is it that atheists use to determine that there is no Creator? The absence of evidence. See, it is up to those making the positive assertion (in this case that assertion would be 'There is a creator of the universe' or 'Jesus is God'), to prove the assertion. Failing that, the assertion is not valid.

If any of you know the true beginnings of your religion, how can you claim atheists are ignorant? Don't you see the propoganda and manipulation and misinformation you are subjected too? I think atheists and people who do believe are equally intelligent or ignorant, because intelligence does NOT depend on religious beliefs, but on the individual. And how come all you religious people are so darn intolerant of others. Is that taught by your religion?

No, just different views. Christians are more tolerant of others beliefs, yeah laugh if you like. Christians far outnumber Atheists in the US, yet Christians respect and are acceptant of their beliefs (no one complains about evolution, we just want creationism included as well) Christians are willing to listen to others questions and theories, Atheists want to take you to court and claim discrimination if you have different views than they do. Atheists follow a doctrine created by scientists, a doctrine that changes every year or so. Christians follow a doctrine that has been around for thousands of years, the best we can.
I've said it before, Both ideas sound ridiculous. One group believes a supreme being, who always was, created everything. The other group believes everything was created from a speck of dust that either created itself or has always been. I choose the former. There's comfort in thousands of years so called scientists can't refute, versus their own theories that they constantly change every few years.

you mistakenly assert that atheists don't believe in religion because they only look at science for answers. true, my first feelings of doubt came upon me when i started thinking about things on the cosmological scale, but the true reason i realized that i could not believe in god was because i found such reasoning immoral, as should you. it is a joke to sit there and say, "yeah, the atheists, they are the stupid and ignorant ones, not us christians."

I would not say that atheist are ignorant, they are usually well education. College etc.. This does not mean that they are going to understand the bible or get the sense of it.
Jesus said at Matt. 11:25 "I publicly praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intellectual ones and have revealed them to babes."
2 Cor. 4: 3 & 4 says "If, now, the good news we declare is in fact veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing, among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through."
