i work on these for a living and yes if the belt breaks u will bend valves. i have had to replace a few engines because of this. get the belt done when the service says to get it done and make sure they dont use cheap parts as the engines that have gone someone has used a cheap belt and they arnt as strong.

Yes it is, but the timing belt on a 2.7 Santa Fe is forgiving and usually does not break. It is an easy belt job and well worth the money to have a pro do it. Any shop can do this job so pinch your pennies where you can. Just be warned, Hyundai won't cover the powertrain unless you keep up with this service - BEFORE - 60k miles and have it done by a dealer. Engine parts are ridiculously expensive for this so-called economy car.

The belt breaks it costs a lot more than changing the belt, don't push the limits of a timing belt, murphy's law says what can go wrong will go wrong at the most inopertune time,in other words it won't break in the driveway when the engine is idling

if your timing belt actually breaks the engine stops working altogether and your car will not go anywhere. Im surprised Hyundai uses a belt as most new cars use Chains now since they are more reliable.

You have no worry about your concern as once it breaks the car will not run.
