Hey I am teaching myself to play guitar, and so far i've been doing very well. but my problem lately has been finger accuracy. I can't seem to get my fingers to land in the center of the fret and get the sound i want. i always seem to land off to one side and of course it makes funny sounds then. I know that if i practice it will get better, but what im looking for is some sort of technique or practice or something that will help me get that nailed down. any advice?

i always play 4 or 5 notes close to each other to get warmed up before i start playing. that seems to work fine for me.

you want to slow down when you're learning a song..sounds to me like you are trying to play it too fast without much practice.
scales are very important
play four consecutive notes on each string, up and down all 6 strings (so your fingers are on 1,2,3,4 on low e string, then 1,2,3,4 on the a string, and so on)
if yyou get un undesirable sound it is probably because your fingers are still weak...more practice and you'll hear less and less while playing.
also posture is important
make sure you don't stil like a f.a.g.g.o.t., sit so that the guitar is perpendicular to the ground...this way it will be easier to your fingers to hit the appropriate places on teh fretboard...
when you are just starting to play guitar, don't play standing up. if you want to paly standing up at least don't have the guitar too low.
if you practice slowly scales or just going up and down the fretboard it will become a lot easier
good luck

Check the position of your hand on the neck. You might get a good visual of the proper position by looking in an instruction book. Make sure the thumb is pressing on the pad and not just laying there.

It could be that your music may be someting like speed metal. there is nothing wrong with that except that for learning and accuracy something simpler and slower will help thing progress along.Starting out slow and picking up speed on your notes may help as well. The guitar is something that takes a while to master so be patient and good luck and hope this helps you out.

Just try to play the chords without hitting the medal part. If thats what your doing, then just to basic chords first to stretch your fingers and learn the basics instead of jumping to power chords and such..

learn something slower...are you using chords or power chords? are you trying to do a hammer on? anyway start by doing finger stretches and do more finger excercises on the fret board, more your fingers along the fret board by doing hammer ons for power chords anyway but for chords it self just keep tapping your fingers on the fret learning one chord at a time helps. keep practising, try this site http://www.guitarlessonworld.com/exercises/exercise1.htm
