OK, first of all we are going to compare muscles to engines. Engines need fuel to function and oxygen to burn the fuel OK?, the same with muscles, they need fuel in the form of glucose and oxygen so that within them there can be some chemical reactions that make them move. Those chemical reactions are called metabolism. Glucose (the muscles fuel) need to be oxydated in order for the cell's mitochondria to produce ATP. When you exercise your muscles move harder and faster, they need more fuel (glucose) and oxygen to burn the fuel. The same with engines.
On the other side, oxygen is circulating in the blood, when you exercise your muscles demand more oxygen than the current, that issue stimulates some chemical receptors that send signals to the brain and the brain sends other signals that stimulates your heart to pump faster and to breathe harder to bring more oxigen into the body and to give the muscles all the o2 they need.

Think of your heart like the engine to your car. Your heart is the engine that your body uses to deliver everything that your muscles need, especially when you excises. Blood carries both oxygen and carbon dioxide back and forth, to and from the lungs. When you are exercising, your muscles need more O2, and produce more CO2. It needs to be exchanged faster, and you muscles need more energy, in the form of glucose, (blood sugar). In short, the harder you work, the harder that your heart works to give your muscles what they need, and to take away the waste that they need to get rid of. Just like the pistons in the engine of a car work faster, when your foot is pushing down on the accelerator. Hope that answers your question. I am, a cardio-thoracic surgical nurse. There are some great resources on the internet, to learn about the heart... it is an amazing machine. Here is one of the better ones ... www.kidshealth.org/kid/body/heart_SW_p2.html

The oxygen the blood carries is like Gasoline for the muscles. You want the car to go faster you got to give the engine more gas. To get the oxygen (gas) to the musles (engine) your heart has to beat faster.
And all this because you went for a run.

You don't need to get your heart rate up a lot. It also depends on what your doing for exercising. Just walking faster, running, swimming, biking and so on will get it up.

Your heart pushes blood throughout your body. When you excercise it makes the heart stronger. It beats faster becasue it has to work harder to get the blood pumping through the body.

To make it work. Just as you would make your muscles work to become stronger and bigger to efficiently function properly, the heart needs the same. The heart is a muscle and requires work to make it stronger.
