Get it treated now! There is no timetable for it because it's different for everyone. It's a very simple treatment...just take a teeny little pill every day. The diagnostic tests are painless (ultrasound and blood work) too. Hypothyroidism is dangerous BEFORE you get to coma stage, your whole system is off whack...Hair, skin, temperature regulation, circulation, your ability to fight off infection...everything!

I was diagnosed at age 8, and have a pretty severe level of hypothyroidism. I had periods of a year or more when I was off medicine, which is very dangerous, but other than being really tired and extremely irritable, I didn't notice significant problems. I was only in my 20s both times I was off my meds, though, i wouldn't be that stupid now. It is extremely vital if you are of child-bearing age and have any chance of conception to treat it, because lack of thyroid can lead to severe birth defects of the brain, heart, kidneys, and lungs.

It can be months or years, it really depends on the individual. Thyroid meds are fairly cheap, so why risk not taking them. Below is a great thyroid website that should answer any questions you may have. The longer you go without meds, the more severe symptoms will show up.
