I have a recurring dry, red, sometimes dark patch around my mouth and under my lower lip on my chin. Someone told me before it was called 'placenta mask' and had something to do with hormones. I don't know.... I am just tired of it happening and it makes me look horrible. I don't know how to prevent it and have tried getting rid of it with moisturizer, vaseline, or even olive oil. None of it helps. The dry skin eventually flakes off and then I am left with a red patch around my mouth for days. It is so embarrassing. Has anyone else experienced this or know what to do about it?

The most common cause of a scaly red rash or bumps around the mouth in women is a condition called Perioral Dermatitis. The most effective treatment is of course oral antibiotics- the best being Tetracycline or Doxycycline. Sometimes you need to take these antibiotics for several weeks otherwise the condition will recur. You should not take these antibiotics if there is a possibility of pregnancy.

I've heard of the problem although I haven't personally experienced it. I don't know whether it's called "placenta mask" or not, but you are not alone in the symptoms you describe.

You will find some excellent information at www.dermadoctor.com, where you can research by skin condition, brand of skin care products, or take advantage of the "ask the doctor" section if you need help identifying the problem.

If you take birth control pills or hormone supplements, then this may be causing or aggravating the problem for sure!

Finally, you may need to break down and call a dermatologist. The most helpful website in the world is useless if you mis-diagnose the problem, and you could make it worse if you use the wrong treatment. I would say your best and quickest solution would also be the least pleasant.....see the dermatologist!

Good luck!
