My hair has been every color of the rainbow in the past. I know what I'm talking about from trial and error. If you are good with stuff like this, you can do it at home, but since you are asking the question to begin with, perhaps you are not that experienced, so it's best to leave it to a professional.
How do you want it bleached? Highlights or the full head? You know, Cate, dark brunette tresses are all the rage right now. Brunette is the new blonde. Lots of Hollywood actresses are dying their hair darker, like Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz, and Nicole Richie to name a few, but if you still want the blonde, then let's talk about that, shall we?
I would recommend getting highlights. You can still see what's it like being a blonde, but at the same time not losing your brunette identity. Highlights look really cool too, and it's less damaging to your hair, as less of your hair is being used. Bleach basically works by completely stripping your hair of it's color, unfortunately a lot of natural moisture goes along with it. It's extremely damaging. When your hair hears that it's about to be bleached, it goes, "Noooo, noooooo, please don't hurt me!"
Anyway, if you want to be blonde, doing it at home with a frosting kit or bleaching kit you can get at the drugstore or beauty supply shop will turn it a very unnatural looking light orange. It will be brassy which is not a good look at all. Some people might recommend using this purple-ly rinse to tone down brassiness, but it won't work because it's just a rinse and it washes out and it's very hard to tame or tone down a bad case of the brassies.
The pics of beautiful blonde actresses that we see in magazines and on t.v. are creations of professionally trained cosmetologist or hair dressers. They go to school for this. What I have learned from having my fair share of dabbling in the hair color world, is that to get a natural looking blonde shade, you need to use a toner. Actually your hair has to be "double processed". First they remove your existing hair color so as to have a blank canvas to work on. Then they add bleach for the base blonde color. Then they add a brown toner on top of that. This makes it look natural. You can't buy that stuff in stores and it's very hard to do if you're not a professional.
My personal hair dresser charges $25 dollars for blonde highlights, and $70 for a full head double process. I'd say go with the highlights. You can either get chunky highlights or little thin ones. I got chunky ones, and I told her I wanted them just on the top of my head and to leave the rest of my hair brown. It looked really cool. Having 2 tone hair is very trendy right now too.
Anyways, it's something to think about and good luck.

hmmm tricky question really, in my experience u can bleach ur hair at home, i have done it a number of times and nothing bad has happened, however im lucky, im not a hairdresser but i did do a strand test and the skin test. If u do do it at home, MAKE sure u do do a strand test and make sure all the hair is covered evenly otherwise it will look patchy and look terrible. Also if u do it at home make sure ur hair is in excellent condition before even thinking about it, as bleach will strip ur hair, and u dont want it dropping out. If u are UNSURE please go to hair dressers, it might cost more but in the long run it saves a lot of trouble if it goes wrong at home. Also make sure this is what u want, and make sure u will suit being "bleached blonde" as its a bugger to colour once its bleached, because if u dont like the colour u cant cover it for a while as it might go green or pink. hope thats some help.

You said you wanna do it yourself huh! If this is the case then go to a Sally's Beauty Supply. (its cheaper too). Ask a clerk for help too. Buy your bleach and red out. You can mix it! This will make it so you are not orange. Then apply a toner. This will not damage your hair. It gives it a under tone. Make sure with bleach you keep your head room tempter if you get a draft it will deactivate it and you'll have spots. After your done and shampooing it out in warm water your hair follicles are open already so add a GOOD conditioner and keep that in for 24 hrs.

well if your hair is strong and healthy then there isnt a reason you wouldnt be able to do it yourself. the salon might have more satisfying results but if your confident with dying your own hair GO FOR IT. use a good bleach so it wont fall out. i honestly dont know which bleach is the less damaging but i say just do it :)

I'd recommend the hairdressers, but if you do it yourself remember to follow the instructions carefully - it sounds silly, but my friend dyed her hair a much lighter shade than her own and panicked halfway through because it looked 'too orange'. This was because the dye was taking away her natural colour and had not yet developed the tones of the shade on the packet. Cue much crying and an emergency rush to the hairdressers (in a headscarf!)

I would not suggest you bleach your hair on your own. Go to a stylist - they are trained. If you mess your hair up it could cost hundreds of dollars to fix it by a professional.
Just go to a stylist initially and you will save yourself lots of money and trouble.

Nope it isnt a good idea to bleach your hair. Loads of things could go wrong, leave it to the professionals. If you go to the hairdressers ask them if they could do it for you but if you dont want that then ask them how to.

errrrrrrrrrrr I would go to the hair dresser especially if this is the first time you have done it, they can match a shade to your skin colour plus you tend to go either orange or canary yellow when you do it at home and you wouldnt want that would you!!!
Find your local Toni and Guy they do model evenings so its a reduced price and they always do your hair really well!
Nice one!

I did my own, but I did research before doing it. If you plan to do it on your own, make sure you read everything you can about it beforehand and know how to fix any errors or problems. Otherwise, go to a hairdresser.
