personally i carry a kubaton, and when i go for my walks i carry a retractable baton..
i've only had to use my retractable baton once, and that was against a couple of dogs that thought it'd be a good idea to stand around and attack people walking on the trail.. seriously they were chasing people, when they were caught, we found out that they were trained to fight.. tore a chunk out of the officers arm when he tried to get one of them in the cage..
but yes, my husband has had an incident of a local, newcomer to the police station(small town, most cops know my hubby) stop him while he's walking down the street with his escrima stick asking what's that for? what are you planning to use that for? very smug and arrogant.. my husband snapped back, for protection, it's not conceild, i have a legal right to carry a stick for my personal protection against stray dogs and anyone who'd consider attacking me..
well, that shut the young rookie up and he drove off... he later appologizes to my husband after asking some of the other officers who he was.. heck, he's trained half of them, lol.. lets say the rookie felt more than sheepish for his antics..
i've gotten some questions about my kubaton as well, but it's mostly from people who are curious about what it is.. some guess right, but others tend to have their mind stuck in the gutter..
we also have oc spray and an extensive collection of short blades in various places around our house..
hey i look at it this way, i'm 5 ft 126lbs of shortness, when in my lifetime would i be attacked by a 5ft guy, no if anything he's going to be at least a foot taller than me and probably 80lbs heavier.. in that case i'm completely out gunned.. yeah i could use my krav maga, but do i really want him getting that close to me, uh, not really..
i want to stun and run, whether it's throwing my seering cup of starbucks in his face, blinding him with pepper spray, a whack to the knee with a retractable baton, a painful sweep of my keys to his eyes or a full force thrust into his collarbone or groin with my kubaton.. you come at me, don't expect me to play fair.. that's for sure..
man or woman, i think it's sensible to carry some form of weapon, lethal or non.. and don't just carry it, learn how to use it.. remember in a reality situation the tables can always turn and turn quickly, your weapon can quickly become their weapon.. so if you carry a gun, learn gun defense, a knife, learn knife defense.. never take any weapon lightly, you'll regret it...
okay i guess what all my ranting is trying to convey is self defense weapons are a great idea, any form of self protection is not just a good idea but your right, not paranoia, but awareness, and remember none of us are above being attacked..

I was once arrested for "carrying" nunchuku , under section 88 c of the Canadian Criminal code (Prohibited weapon)
I was on my way to practice , but the meat head (military police) didn't see it that way.
I submitted peacefully to being arrested and hired a great lawyer.
Since I was non military , the jerks had to pursue me in civilian court , where I promptly won the case.
I was not carrying the weapon for self defense purposes , but as a sport training tool on my way to my sport , much like a baseball bat could be considered a weapon.
Thankfully the judge saw things my way.
I am not sure what the judge would have said if I testified the weapon was intended for self defense. I may have been found guilty if I had a "weapon" , not a "training tool"
I do not carry any weapons now , unless we are training in bow staff (outdoors). And I never carry them for self defense purposes.
That's my answer.

My style is so deadly that I can never use it... LOL
Anyway, hood has it right, tell the officer what you have. They do not and should not like surprises. If you use a weapon, there had better be justification or there could be repercussions.
I usually have keys on me but I can't say that I have ever used them as a weapon.

Anything improvised to defend yourself is a weapon. So saying it is anything but that is a lie and makes you look like a boob... There is nothing wrong with carrying a weapon. Its how you use it that makes it either illegal or legal.
Most Police only care that you tell them you have something on you. Not because its illegal, they just don't like surprises, and if you are not up front with them about why you have it or what it is, what else are you hiding from them? Pretty self explanatory question if you ask me.

Well let me tell you this. A young man I work with was shot at while driving his truck in Minneapolis (MN.)..some big holes from a 45 cal. in the side of of his truck. He confronted me about the problem and in this conversation he stated he wanted to buy a gun for protection. I told him you'll end up in jail my friend because you can't run around town with a gun in your car. He is not 21 so he could not buy a handgun, that's good.
Well a few days later he told me he was going to buy one of these personal self defense shotguns with a very short barrel. I told him "YOU ARE NUTS" "YOU'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOUR SELF IF YOU KILL SOMEONE" and YOU'LL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!".
Now this is the funny part. Later he told me the salesman told him it was not illegal to have the shotgun in his car. I told him you would be stupid to listen to him, he has you're cash and you go to jail...not him. So I said look if you don't believe call you local Police and ask them. Well he did and they told him the same story..it's okay to have that in your vehicle.
He bought that shotgun, got stopped and the officer took away that shotgun and gave him a ticket in return.
Don't drive around with any type of weapon in your car unless you are ready to pay the Piper.

car keys obvious choice, comb, again in skilled hands fairly effective ,chain type dog lead kept in coat pocket etc think of some yourself .if you dont have the skill to use these innocuous items then acquire it . the best form of self defence is to be aware and avoid the situation before it arises.

I always have my keys in my hand...just in case.On my set of keys I have a legitimate sharp object which if asked by the police I would say is,a tightener for my daughters braces.Never had to use it,but wouldn't think twice in the case of an attack.

Empty out a vicks sinex bottle into a container. Fill it with water and adjust the nozzle with a hot needle or similar until you can hit your target bang on. Empty it out and then fill it with ammonia. Leave space for a little of the vicks you saved to mask the smell and thats it. Fire that within 12 inches of someones face and they are going DOWN. Good up to around 8 feet and no John Q Law is gonna inspect summit youve had up your nose is he....!

Usually I do not carry anything but if i do I either carry a tactical folding knife or pepper spray.
But with today's "high security" standards I do not feel comfortable carrying anything.
