That is interesting to think about. Occasionally it happens to me and the feeling is so intense that i wake in a frenzy. I laugh afterwards at the thought of how i must have looked during this episode.
I don't know why it is either but it is interesting.
I wonder if this is where the phrase "Falling asleep" comes from?

I felt that myself a couple of times.. falling into a void. For what I've read so far about it, there could be two explanations: a scientific one and a more.. not proven yet answer.

The medical response is that your body when asleep secrets a type of hormone (melatonin) which prevents you getting out of bed and acting a dream :) in other words.. your motorneurons are inhibited. I think that experiencing fluctuations in this process, especially when waking up, you could feel like falling or have other moving sensations.

The second explanation relies in obe (outer body experiences) or astral projections which basically sustain the idea that you get detached from your physical body. This could also explain it.

What do you think ?
