I have an audition tonight for the show "Children Of Eden". My nervousness gets the best of me when it comes to singing, so I force it and my vibrato becomes thick and uncomfortable. Any tips on keeping a relaxed singing voice during an audition?

even though its probably a little late for you to see this answer before your audition, im going to give it to you anyway in hopes it will help you in the future :)
i am a singer, and therefore do a lot of perorming and i also suffer from stage fright, so i understand completely where you are coming from.
the best way to keep a relaxed voice is to be relaxed by doing anything you can to dispel the nerves. i find the best way to act/ sing well when nervous is to connect to what you are doing. when you begin to act your scene, focus in on what you are doing and enjoy it, because when a person is having fun whilst performing, even if the scene is depressing, the audience/ assessors will see and repond to this. Real passion will make your performance a milllion times more compelling than if you were to simply "go though the motions". Enjoying yourself works a treat, as it despels the nerves, therefore calming the uncontrollable vibrato.
looking above the heads of assessors while performing, the presence of a loved one, or doing a ridiculous drama warm-up exercise that makes you laugh are big helpers too.

Before you go in to audition, find a quiet place for a moment and breathe deeply through your mouth with your lips pursed, as though you were sucking on a straw. Blow out the same way (lips pursed). Imagine each breath as taking some of your nervousness and blowing out of your body. Focus on your breathing and nothing else. Pretty soon, you'll start to feel a little calmer. It won't totally erase your nerves, but it *will* help you feel more in control. Also remember to plan and take good breaths while you're auditioning. Good luck!

This sounds kind of simple but it works for me. I have two thoughts when I go to perform or sing in front of people. I have alot of experience as a performer.

1. Gve yourself a minute before you go on stage and channel all that nervous energy (which is rushing adrenaline) and choose to use it to help your performance. Channel it to help you control your muscles and breathing.

2. Look at any chance you have to audition for anything as something that you have a wonderful oppritunity and not something you have to do but something you GET to do... I mean after all you are getting the chance to sing.

I hope this is some help... I know it is hard to do but the more you do it the easier it will become. You will learn over time how to deal with it and use your nerves to help you instead of get in your way.

I know it is a little late for this answer BUT...sing in front of parents, in front of your neighbor, stand outside and sing on the street. This way, the more people that you sing in front of that make you ncomfortable, the more at ease you will become. Always sing for the people that you are most afraid of singing to before an audition. I was always nervous to perform in front of my friends so I would ask them to come watch me rehearse.

Hey Sarah,
Yeah, breathe! I agree. Let each intake of breath relax you as you take it in. I'd also encourage you to enjoy the opportunity you're about to have to show off your talents. Try not to think of the auditioners as critics. Remember they are looking for you as much as you're looking for them. It's their job to put great talent on their stage, so show 'em what you got! If you can do an amazing audition by yourself at home, you can certainly do one at the actual audition. Just try to think of them as genuine people, not judges, and let them enjoy you and the story in your song. Break a leg tonight!

i always get really nervous when i audition too...but now i have learned to control it by:

1.) i know this is a trick u prolly already know, but look above the judges head...it looks like your making eye contact, but you don't have to be as nervous....

2.) i think about what i would get out of the audition. I mean, acting is probably your life...so think, wouldn't you be mad at yourself for being nervous if it cost you your spot? use that as inspiration to force yourself to be less nervous, and think YOU WILL MAKE IT!!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

p.s....i love acting too, and i was wondering how u found out where to audition....thanks a bunch!!

1. Breathe!
2. Look over the audiences heads if you must at first.
3. Don't focus on being impressive. Focus on doing your best.

Good luck!

BREATHE
i know just how being nervous feels!
you have to find some way to calm your nerves.
One thing that helps me is that if i can hear someone singing that I know i can sing better then, it boosts my confidence i usually steal the show then.LOL
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
