I am a white Pagan woman, and I have a Southern accent, and I live in NYC. I swim three mornings a week. Today it was cold and my hair was still damp, so I twisted the back of my hair up and put a designer scarf over it. I don't like what hats do to my hair. I guess it looked like hijab, even though my bangs were out.

Wow. I got some really hostile stares on the bus. And a man asked, "How *could* you?" He thought I was a convert to Islam. I told him he could think what he wanted, but it's winter, and what I'm wearing on my head doesn't hurt him whether it's for religious reasons or not.

A Muslim co-worker did want to know where I got the cute scarf, though.

Now it's tying my hair back, in a ponytail, and my big bad Vera Bradley scarf won't scare anyone when I go out to lunch today, I bet.

What's the big deal? Do other women (Muslim or not) have experiences like this? Have you ever treated someone like this?

I know I'm ranting, but I want to hear your thoughts.

Shortly after 9/11, a woman who I knew (blonde, blue-eyed, pale, now deceased) who was getting radiation treatments for cancer and therefore wore a scarf over her head all the time, was confronted by a family of ignorant bigots in the parking lot of a store. The father first called her names, then snatched the scarf off her head and threw it onto the ground (in front of his young children - what a lovely example to set).

I wish I could say that this person had the grace to be ashamed of himself, but that would be a lie.

The hijab is a head covering worn in a particular way only allowing the face to be seen. Push come to shove, most people don't have a problem with it. The issue comes from those who wear a veil to cover they face, some even their eyes. Aside from the religious and security aspects of this, it is very disarming to speak to someone in person and not see their facial expressions.

the concern isn't a lot that women folk pick to gown modestly-- what I honestly have a project with is the concept that women folk who do not conceal are someway perceived as "requesting it" and specifically societies might want to be killed for going out uncovered-- the position there's no similar ordinary for adult men. the numerous causes given for why women folk could conceal, i.e. that the sight of their hair or their ankle will reason adult men to be unable to regulate themselves, is basically ridiculous. it really is a detrimental double ordinary. the very reality of the be counted is that for the duration of a cutting-edge society, women folk and adult men could have the capacity to be sure on what they pick to positioned on (in all fairness) and may have the capacity to stay their lives free of harassment or maybe endangerment in the experience that they are not wearing a particular way. there is no longer some thing contained in the Koran that announces a lady has to keep her head coated in any respect cases-- it really is a rule that become invented by way of non secular elders and its strict enforcement is yet differently to suppress women folk. now to not teach the very shown reality that particular kinds of very restrictive masking, fantastically masking of the completed face or each little thing in spite of the undeniable fact that the eyes, makes it puzzling to have freedom of move. you are able to't rigidity that way, you are able to't play events (it truly is no longer allowed besides), you are able to't even go the line real. it truly is basically no longer rational.

The big deal is that most Westeners think that Muslim women need to be liberatead from Islam and that if they wear hijab than they are being oppressed. And yes people look at me weird when they see I'm a Muslimah.
