Depends how the breakup happened, but I think it's OK to say the hell with that idea

the whole being friends thing after a break up never works, if you had feelings for someone its hard to be just friends cause you'll always end up wanting more than a friendship which can get awkward, and most of the time its better off not being friends with an ex, but you can be friendly with a ex, you dont have to totally hate them.

Immediately after a break that rarely work unless it was a mutual agreement that you both want to move on and find someone else. However, give it a few months and it works if neither party is still hoping for it blossom into a relationship and truely do want to just be friends.

It's a useless lie that was fabricated to let someone down easy. These days, it means nothing. Nowadays, it's just as bad as saying "I've been sleeping around behind your back." It's the lamest cliche in the world, right next to "of course size doesn't matter". Once you've been intimate, the notion of being just friends is ridiculous; you've had private moments, you know things about the other person that not a lot of people know. Now you just want to be friends? Who is kidding who?
Bottom line, try this: When she says "Let's just be friends", don't yell, don't bully, don't simper or bribe, just look at her square in the eye and say, "Sure. Let's just be friends. Because I wouldn't want to waste your time, and I certainly don't want to wear my heart on my sleeve for someone who doesn't care. I think we have better things to do with our time. Call me if you want to talk about it." Just leave it at that and walk away.

That never works. I don't want even want to be in the same room with someone I used to go with. Never use that line when breaking up b/c you most likely won't stay friends, and you both know it, but don't want to say it. Just break up and leave it at that.

90% of the time when "CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS" is said after the break up it doesn't happen. People say that they would want to still be friends but then they never act on it.

I give credit to anyone that can actually make it happpen. Once I have crossed the threshold into intamacy, it's always been impossible for me to cross back. It doesn't work for me and I don't even try anymore. I figure I have enough friends, anyways, and when I met whomever is asking to "just be friends", that's not what I was looking for at the time. Maybe callous, but it is realistic to me.

I agree with aric a, I think it's a BS. At some point in the future, you'll eventually be friends again. If those "Can We Be Friends?" uttered, sometimes there's a questionable motive behind it.

I personally would find being friends pretty awkward just for the fact that if they met someone else how would that make you feel, i wouldn't want to know about the next person in their lifes. Ive always said if we broke up then thats it ..were over completely

I think it is impossible to be friends right after. I use it, but that is because I really do want to be friends. It takes time though. My ex and I aren't friends and it was in july when we broke up. My other exes are usually good friends with me.
