I agree with what Somebody says, but folks who ask this question usually do not know what most of these things are. You can go to http://www.infection-control.com/ and click on your state to find out what the requirements are in your state. Some states do not have any but most do.

Most importantly, ask the tattoo shop or your artist about their sterilization policy and ask them to explain what they do to keep you safe. A shop that is unwilling to explain these to you - SHOULD BE AVOIDED! Additionally, many shops now have internet sites and you can often find information about their autoclave and sterilization on the site. Know before you go. Good for you to ask this question, and be concerned but most reputable shops are very safe.

Now do a little research and go get your tat!

the first thing i would ask to see is their certificate from the state board of health. second i would want to see that they wear gloves when handling any of their tattoo products. that they remove their needles and tubes from sterilized packages. that they spray off all surfaces before they do anything. that they get clean ink caps to put ink in. that they put sterile cloths over work surfaces and anywhere you may need to lay against to get worked on. i would suggest that you visit the shop before you plan on getting tattooed. but also i think the most important thing to do is to check out the artist and make sure that they are competent and talented. not all tattooers are good at what they do. just because they own a gun doesn't mean that it will look good when it is done. look at the artists portfolio and if it doesn't impress you then don't get tattooed there.
good luck!

Ask for a tour. You want it to look clean and organized....no trash, needles or debris in the open. Ask to see their autoclave and mold spore tests. Ask every question you can and if the shop workers are jerks about it, then they have no concern for you....just your money.
