First you hope that someone has constructed this tree. If you look at the Thompson GENFORUM (site below, you can ask there). Genealogy.com may have it on Ancestry.com. Also, Roots may have it.

Family Search would be my second stop. Look at the site, put in his name, see if a pedigree file comes up for him. Sometimes you get lucky there.
