Before we won the a decisive naval battle at midway island during world war 2 we sent out a message for the Japanese to intercept stating the main condensers which provided the island with fresh drinking water were down . That wasn't true but was done to find out for sure about japans plan to attack and take over the island by listening for Japanese messages regarding our broad casted information on the condensers.
We heard a Japanese response and then were sure of their plans and were able to plan an attack which disabled 4 of the Japanese carriers effectively destroying the heart of the Japanese navy.
