I am having friends and family over for a chocolate dipping party for Valentine's Day. Any suggestions on what to dip or drizzle? What is the simplest ways to melt and keep chocolate melted while dipping? Thanks!

Borrow two or three fundue sets from friends. Fill one with white chocolate, one with dark and one with regular chocolate. Try to get your hands on Belgian chocolate like Cote D'ore or Callebaut. If you want you can even ad a small amount of liquer to the chocolate (whisky, vodka or brandy) once it's melted. Buy lots of fruit like strawberries oranges, pineaples... Cut the bigger fruits in small pieces. Pierce the fruit with wooden toothpics or the longer variety and enjoy your choco-evening...

First of all, can I come? What a lovely idea. The fondue pot (with the low heat candle) is a good idea. You can also have a nice gooey mix on the stove at low heat -- turn it on and off at intervals. For things to dip -- strawberries, of course -- with a bowl of powdered sugar on the side, sliced bananas, big hot salted pretzels, tiny marshmallows. For drizzling, make some crepes beforehand, stick them in the freezer, thaw them and lather them with whipped cream. Also good for drizzling would be tiny cups of vanilla, buttterscotch and chocolate pudding. Brownies of every sort cut into nibble-sized pieces would work for both dipping and drizzling. Sigh. My endorphin level is rising just thinking about your party!

Chocolate fountains have gone done significantly in price. I think you can get them for like $20 now. They are VERY cool, and you don't need skewers. They look so pretty, too.

You can dip strawberries, marshmallows, graham cracker sticks, pretzels, even some cheeses are good! I recently did a chocolate fountain set up for a friend's wedding, and we had a girls night a few days before to make sure the fountain ran right, and try out different dipping items.

Two parties for one reason! ;)

Look out for a chocolate fondue set at your local home ware/kitchen ware store or walmart, etc. Make sure it is a chocolate one because I believe the cheese ones are made to have more heat which could damage the taste of the chocolate.
You can dip any kind of fruit and maybe some sweet bread or cake.

There are these chocolate fountain things (image here: http://rival.kitchen-hills.com/Rival-CFF5-Chocolate-Fondue-Fountain-B000AAYWN6.htm) they are perfect - they circulate the chocolate for a good while without slowing or gumming up and you can keep adding chocolate to them to keep the flow steady. They work well with chocolate chips, bars and those discs you get at candy making stores. For dipping you can use berries, sponge cake, Carr's water crackers and marshmallows. This is a favorite dessert at family get togethers, be sure to have a goods selection of coffee and tea or milk as the sweets tend to need a balance. Good Luck!

Also, don't overlook pretzel sticks...your guests will thank you! And a side note, I went to a choc festival a year ago, and you name it, it was dipped...the wierdest I saw was choc dipped twinkies (my roommate's husband LOVED it) and choc dipped potato chips. Not bad at alll........

for the melting, I think hte easiest way is in a fondue pot since it always has steady heat under it and you can move it to where you want it, but if you don't have one, you might look into renting a chocolate fountain. They're much less expensive than they used to be, and always a crowd pleaser.

the simplest way to melt chocolate and keep it melted is to boil water in one big pot and put a smaller pot with the chocolate in it inside the boiling water. it looks better if u use a fondue set. a variety of fruits for dipping is standard but also good are small cakes and cookies.

If you can find mini cream puffs in the freezer section of your grocery store (I get them at Costco here in Vancouver) they are amazing dipped in warm chocolate! I usually serve those along with strawberries, fresh pineapple, and banana slices. I make my chocolate sauce by melting about 4 chunks of toblerone milk chocolate and a can of hersheys chocolate sauce in the microwave. Then I stir in a little cream. I keep it warm in a chocolate fondue pot over a tealight candle. It's really easy. If you don't have a proper chocolate fondue set you should think about getting one. They're really inexpensive and work well.
