While having a couple of fillings replaced I was given an injection and it felt like the needle went through my ear, I raised my hand for the dentist to stop and she said that I just have a lot of muscle back there. That night when the numbness wore off I was in so much pain and my face was swollen. The pain was in my ear, jaw and the side of my neck. I returned the following morning to see another dentist, I was told that perhaps the other dentist hit a nerve hub and that the pain should go away in a few days and I was given a perscription for pain killers. Well it's about 3 weeks since that happened and I still have pain in my ear and jaw. I went to the doctor and I was referred to an ENT specialist but my appointment isn't until next month. What happened and what's going on??? Who do I see about this problem?

I am very serious when I say you need to consult a lawyer. The dentist damaged nerves and tissue which may or may not partially or totally regenerate. If they don't, you are going to be like that the rest of your life. A lawyer can advise you on your next step. Call one today.

You should return to the original dentist and have him/her diagnosis the problem. Perhaps a nerve was hit during the injection, but swelling of the face from it??? There are many things that could be causing the problem, and one of which could be the fillings that were replaced. Were they deep? What type of dental material was used to fill them, and are you having a reaction to this material? These are things that the dentist who did the work would know. So, I would suggest that you return and ask them. He/she may refer you (at no charge to you) to a specialist, or replace the fillings with a seditive filling and see if that helps. Don't change dentist just because you think you had something unusual happen, most times it's pretty common. I hope I've been of some help and good luck.

He could have nicked a nerve. Not a big deal as it will eventually heal. However......there is a condition known as mastoiditis that could present like what you have. It is life threatening. You MUST go to your ENT appointment. And you should go to the emergency room if you run a high fever, feel dizzy, nauseous or otherwise really sick. Mastoiditis is an infection in the area where your jaw connects to your skull through a joint. Your brain is on the other side of the bone there. It's actually very much like an abscess. If it breaks through to the brain side, you are in BIG trouble. The ENT will be able to quickly tell if there is anything you should be worried about.

Hello =)

I would make another "emergency appointment" with the dentist, to at least get some more pain medicine until your ENT appointment.

Sounds like an unfortunate incident, but these things do happen.

Namaste,

You need to tell the specialist that you are in severe pain. They will move your appt. up to a sooner time. You may also want to go to the emergency room for faster results. But they may just give you pain killers and refer you to a specialist. Call your insurance provider if you have one and they may recommend a few specialists who could get you in sooner.
