When you sign up for the military, even before we got attacked in 2001, wouldn't you pretty much plan to do something combat? You could never expect to actually be at war, but you ARE joining the military of a country that HAS gone to war before.

I am sick of hearing military guys saying " I didn't know there would be war in Iraq, I shouldn't have joined". You volunteered, and agreed to help keep America safe, no matter what cost.

I have the utmost respect for anyone in the military, but for that guy who refuses to go to Iraq, I think he should be hanged on national television. Right before the Super Bowl. Let the world know we won't put up with a traitor. Thousands of Americans are risking their lives right now to keep the country safe, but you are just slapping them in the face and saying you are better than them.

If you don't want to go to war, DON'T SIGN UP FOR THE MILITARY!! This isn't Vietnam, we have a VOLUNTEER army. We have no draft!!! What is wrong with these people??

well, I don't agree with the hanging part, but yeah people who sign up for the military shouldn't be surprised if they have to go to war.. the government doesn't spend all that money to train them for nothing..

Haaa funny you ask this questions because I am one of those people! I am separating when my time is up. The military isn't for everyone. Most people don't know that until after they join. Then the military makes it impossible to get out before their time is up. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life so I used the military as a stepping stone. (Everyone has their story) I came in before 2000. Things were different. The military was different. Now things changed it's not for me...I'm moving on!

Also, the commercials / recruiters for the military are misleading. One of the biggest highlights for the military commercial is: "You can earn money for school." Knowing that most people in America can't afford to go to school. (So who are they targeting?) The poor youth..many with no proper guidance. Also, some recruiters lie, some don't tell you the whole truth, a lot bend the truth. Again the military isn't for everyone...I say use it for what it's worth...A free education.

Maybe more people can get lucky like me and never deploy.

Its not a matter of intellegence, when I joined I had no problem with taking someones life. The more I matured I relized I hadd become a Concious Objector. Some times peoples views and morals change, for good or bad. So when the war had started I was against it not only because of the reasons, but because of my own personal morales.

So before you talk **** about me, can you say you have never changed your opinion or beliefs on something or never have been wrong about something. Probably not.

Now give up your rant about about that kid we all pretty much agree he isn't to smart.

Dirka,Dirka, those that are surprised about having to go to war after signing on the dotted line, would more than likely be surprised by a bowl movement.

Those that signed up and are complaining were probably trying to get away from mama. Saw a few of those in the military and a good ole fashioned blanket party took care of that.

Personally, I thinks it a result of the recruiting methods. The ads are all selling the military as way to get free training for lucrative civilian careers. They seem to be actively ignoring the concept of military involvement in war. When have you ever seen a TV ad showing a veteran in a wheel chair with no legs, having lost them to a land mine, advising people to join up and run the same risks he did?
As to the guy refusing to serve in what he considers an unjust war, if he truly feels that way then it is his duty as an American serviceman to do just what he did. It was established at both Anderson ville and Nuremberg that a soldier is answerable above all to his own conscience. I spent 20 years in the U.S Navy, I was around for both Nam and Desert Storm, and I said from day one I would refuse to obey any order that violated my own sense of right and wrong. To do anything less is to put yourself on the same level as the men who herded Jewish children into ovens during WW2.

Me specially being an army brat, sister, and fiance can tell you that is not easy being in iraq! The soldiers are over there fighting for something that they dont know what it is, they are just there trying to help people that really do not want our help! I understand if you were trained to be infantry, but what in the world in an air traffic controller going to be doing in Iraq? ATC's do not get trained to shoot or kill anybody their job is to guide planes, so now you know why a lot of this people are getting out of the military they are not trained and they are giving their lives for someone that doesnt care! Would you give your life for someone that doesnt care?

part of the problem is that people join believing (because of a recruiter, or other reasons) that they can learn a skill, get money for college, see the world, etc.... and never have to fight or get near combat. Those people basically look at enlisting as a best case scenario, and then when they do get deployed they think they were wronged, or have the option to not go.

My son is a National Guard Reservist at age 20. He is contemplating going to Iraq. You know what he told me, "I want to go over there, teach those people how to use a gun so they can fight on their own." Guess what?! I think that is what the President is trying to achieve. As for this man not wanting to go, How do the people already in Iraq or have already been there and come home feel about it. That's what matters more to me.

I don't think they are dumb at all for the particular war in Iraq but to agree with you to the extent that they should be prepared for a war after all they did join . This doesn't negate having an opinion of their own but they are expected to follow orders and agreed to do so.

I think its absolutely deplorable for you to say this man is a traitor and suggest that he should be hanged. This is the man's personal view. And you suggest he should be killed for his personnel views because they don't match yours? In my eyes that would make you no better than a radical terrorist. If you're going to respect the military respect his own personnel views. You may think I don't support the Military. However, you would be wrong. Discharged due to a previous medical condition and son of a MSgt.
