The reason they are telling you this is because they buy them in sets and if you buy just the mattress, they will have a broken set which is hard to get rid of. On the other hand, your mattress will last much longer if it is placed on a matching box springs rather than just on the floor or on an unmatched box springs. But hey, it's your money and if you want just the mattress, go for it. If they won't sell you just the mattress, go on down the road to the next business and buy one there.

If your just putting it on the floor, its fine to go without the box springs. They do give the bed a little more spring & give though. If you were putting the matress on a bed you'd need the springs to support the matress otherwise it would sag between the beds framework.
The salespeople don't like breaking up a set, they buy it that way and would be stuck with an extra set of unused springs they probably couldn't sell.

You can put just the mattress on the bed proving you put some type of support on the frame like a sheet of plywood.

I like the idea of the platform beds and hope to get one soon. When I do, I will not be using a box spring.

If you put it on the floor, you don't need the box springs. If you put it on a frame, you definitely do. They're just trying to make more $.
