I have to walk in the evening from the 6 line to 89th and 1st Ave. Is this a safe walk? If so, what is the more interesting street - shopping, restaurants, etc... to walk down 86th or 89th?

Thanks!!!!!

86th street is definitely more populated. It has both residential buildings and businesses and is well lit. 89th street is all residential and probably okay but to be safe, stay on 86th.

It is totally safe. I live in that area and walk around at night all the time.

That being said, if you don't feel totally secure, then walk across 86th Street, which is very well-lit and crowded most of the time. It will probably take you about10 minutes to walk from Lexington to 1st Ave.

There are buses that run up and down 86th, so you could do that as well. You can get a free transfer from the train to the bus (and vice versa), so it will not cost you any extra.

But honestly, it is a VERY safe area.

i would walk up lexington avenue and then cross over to first when i get to 86 street. but i think the 6 train takes you right up there you know??

i never feel unsafe walking through this neighborhood (used to live there). There are enough people around so that you never feel isolated.
