I cant get my picture to look right. It seems flat and washed out.

If you have a DVD player, try to rent a DVD which on the back has the Logo "THX Optimizer". It includes a set of screens and instructions to help you adjust brightness and contrast on your TV. Examples: Star War movies and "Finding nemo", 2-disc set.

There is no "universal" optimal calibration. Each TV is different and each source is different, so you need a DVD with calibration tools (Video Essentials is another good one, if you want to spend about $25)
