dogs are coming into our yard, tearing things up under our home, fighting with our dog, chasing our cat, and waking us up at night with constant barking and fighting. i chase them off as often as i can, but it doesn't work. these dogs are costing us money to repair things under the house. we live in "the woods" there is no animal control. my next step is to start shooting them. any suggestions?

there is no animal control here. the police told me to shoot them, and the neighbors just say there's nothing they can do. Putting up a fence is not a realistic option for us right now. bullets are cheaper. thanks for your answers, though.

It's your property...you have a right to protect what is yours. Sounds like "your next step" is valid. It is a lawful act on your private property to prevent destruction. At least in Indiana it is.

You didn't say whether you had a fence, so obviously that would be step 1.

Do you know where these dogs are coming from? Could you talk to the owners or leave a note at their homes, voicing your concerns?

Additionally, we had raccoon problems and the dept of Wildlife has a program where you can "check out" big traps that don't hurt the animal. You could then take the offending animal to your local shelter, if all other avenues, such as fence building and contacting neighbors don't work.

tabithab is right the next step is to build a really tall fence like 7 or so ft. and for extra security put it about a foot under the ground too so they can't dig under the fence as that would be their next move. If you don't put a section of fence under the ground and they still get into your yard after you put a fence up then you can shoot them. First try something that is more animal friendly, then get more drastic.

may I suggest calling the local police your area and explain the situation to them, and inform them that you just might have to shoot the animal to protect your animals as well as your family and your property. I would also suggest getting a picture of the dog (s) who enter your yard, or even video camera as well, this will help the animal control officers to spot the dogs especially if they are loose and they see them. Good luck. Maybe once you find out who the dogs owner is you can send them the bill for damages. Dogs should be in their own yard on a leash. I hope things work out for you. Good luck.

Do you know who owns these dogs? Can you go after their owners for damages? Dog owners are legally responsible for damage caused by their animals. Try to get pictures, or better yet videos.

A fence is a wonderful thing, but I understand how expensive that can be.

In many jurisdictions, you are within your rights to shoot any dog harassing your livestock.

Is there any possibility of catching these animals and bringing them to the pound?

First call your animal control in your county, second if you have a fence fill in any gaps, if you don't have a fense now might be a good time to get one, it will also help the value of the property, now if you rent the property call the person(s) you rent from and address this issue.

Why would you want to shoot them???? How would you feel if after you shot someone else's dog they figured you did it and put poison on your property and killed your dog and cat? That's not the answer to solve your problem!!!! Invest some $$$$$ and put up a fence.

First, try talking to the owners. If that doesn't work , call the police. If THAT doesn't work, build a fence. Do NOT shoot the dogs. Besides being illegal and immoral, you open yourself up to criminal and civil penalties. Stupid idea.
