It seems that many students are lacking it, more so than in the private schools. My kids go to a private school now, but will transfer to public next year (due to trying to save for college)
I am very nervous about this.
Thoughts?

Of course I teach my kids respect at home,
but I think it should be taught at school too!

That's the fault of the parents, not the school.

If kids don't learn respect at home and if it is not reinforced in the home, they do not show respect at school. While the schools do teach respect, if there is no support from the parents, it becomes a futile effort. Learning begins VERY early in life. Part of the problem is that when both parents work, many kids just do not receive enough guidance from their parents. And unfortunately, in this economy most parents must work. It has been hypothesized that kids are no more than a reflection of their parents values until they are seven. And while teachers do make a great effort to socialize kids, they cannot give them the one on one attention they need to develop their character and values. How can you parent 25 to 30 kids at a time within the span of a school day and still teach the required lessons? A teacher can only do minimal parenting. So let me ask you this:Do parents teach a simple thing like respect?

No offense, but I think that one of the reasons why many kids lack respect is because parents expect schools to teach them absolutely everything while in fact there are some things that the parents are responsible for teaching their kids. One of the things that parents have always been expected to teach their kids is respect. In schools they generally teach a bit about it too (or remind kids about it), but it starts with the parents right in early childhood and sadly many parents neglect that duty. They are too busy doing everything else than raising their own kids and they've come to expect schools to take care of everything for them.

They try to teach it, but that's the kind of thing that really needs to be taught by the parents, at home, since birth. It's learned by example, and proper loving discipline. Unfortunately, too many parents nowadays do NOT teach their children to respect others, and to respect authority.

Public schools don't "teach" respect. That's just something that should fall on the parent (no offense intended). You should be teaching your own children to respect adults as their superiors and other kids in their class as equals.

Not to be redundant, but respect starts at home. Public schools' priority is teaching academics, not values. Values come from the home.

It is the responsibilty of the parents to teach respect, but most schools, that I know of anyways, has a program to teach core values, i.e. respect.

It's up to the parents to teach respect.

Keep your kids in private school if you can. They will have a much better education than anything the public system can provide.

You can't teach respect...it is learned by example.

If parents and teachers show no respect, then children learn respect is not important.

Public schools should be teaching reading, writing, arithmetic, and science.

Why can't the parents start doing their job?
