I think it'd be fun for a short trip, maybe even a weekend but I currently don't have a passport and don't plan on getting one in the near future. Is it possible to get to Mainland UK from Ireland without ID??

Surprisingly, no.

A passport is not required for travel between Great Britain and Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, as long as you are a citizen of one of those.

Yes, you will need one. I got mine recently for travel to Ireland, it takes about 6 weeks and estimated $125.
