I'd close the deal at the buyer's bank. They can put a cashier's check or cash in your hand directly so you know that it will be good.

Cashier's check, or if they have a personal check drawn on a local bank, go to the bank WITH THEM and cash the check. At that point their bank can give you a certified check if you do not want to carry that much cash. If they are paying cash, take that to YOUR bank, WITH THE BUYER, and deposit it immediately. Your bank will tell you if it is counterfeit or not. You could also buy one of those markers stores use, probably at an office supply store.
The title should be held by you for several days (unless cash is paid) to ensure that the check is OK. At that point you should mail it to them, certified, return receipt requested.

I would request cash or "bank certified check". However, make sure you call the bank and verify the check is legitimate before releasing the car! Phoney bank checks are showing up all over the place and the laymen will not be able to discern the difference by eye!!! Believe me, I received one but called the bank before completing the transaction only to find the guy had immediately disappeared into the woodwork. He is still being sought by law enforcement!

Cash or cashiers check would be the ONLY payments I would take. A bank money order would be next. Personal Check...never.

Cashier's check, money order, or account transfer (EBT). Don't take a personal check unless you are really stocked up on headache medication.

handle the transaction in the dmv office to transfer title with a witness. A scammer would not take the chance of doing thuis here because they verify identity.
