I am going to my first appointment with a therapist today. I am not really sure what to expect. Will she just be asking questions or will I have to give her my life story? I am just a litlle nervous and would like some insight on what to expect. Thank you.

First, calm down. Therapists are just people. They may have gone to school for a long time, but they are still just people. Think of this as a pleasant conversation and remember, anything you tell him/her is completely confidential (they can't tell anybody what you say) unless you say you are going to hurt yourself or someone else. It will be completely painless. Just talk to her/him and most importantly, BE HONEST. They only know what you tell them and they will base your future sessions on that. Good luck and God Bless!!!!!

It's great you're taking this step, if you find the right therapist it can make all the difference in the world. Mine is great and helps me out a lot. Sometimes all it takes is to talk things over with someone to clear your mind and allow you to see things differently.

When you go today, the therapist will ask you about yourself and your life and what made you come to her. Over the course of your meetings, she will probably make some suggestions for different ways you can approach your problems. You do not necessarily need to tell her your whole life's story today, but bear in mind that the more info she has, the better she will be able to help you. After you've seen her a few times and you're more comfortable with the whole thing, you'll probably be able to open up a little more and tell her more about yourself.

Best wishes to you, feel better.

She'll start by asking why you're there, if you think something is important go ahead and tell her. Since it's a first appointment she'll want to know where you are, where you want to be, what you want to accomplish in therapy. Therapy is generally a combination of you telling everything and the therapist asking questions. Sometimes the questions are to get you to think about a problem a certain way or to lead you to an answer.

They usually have an intake form that they have to fill out so they will have specific questions and there will also be time for you to let them know why you are wanting therapy. Try to be a specific as possible about how you have been feeling and your current life circumstances. There will be time in other sessions for life history. Good Luck

Take my word for it. LIE about everything. Dont even give them your real name.
Lie and deny.
