I've got one, a rose. I wanted to have a snake but the tattoo artist said it wouldn't suit me so he gave me some ideas. In the end he designed one just for me! I loved it for a while but now I'm getting older and starting to think about it's removal. It'll leave a scar, not very pretty.
So my advice to you - think long and hard whether you really need it. If yes, choose something that will not make you cringe in a few years time.
Also, as some people suggested already, use the one that fades, semi permanent .
I hope you make the right choice! :-)

I know a few tattoo artists but before I did, I had no idea as to what to get tattooed or even how to approach a tatto artist but here's what to do:
Start by writing a list of things you like - colours, shapes, patterns, animals, what you like to drink, eat - everything that makes you YOU!
Go on the internet and look at images of everything - buildings, nature, shoes, wallpaper patterns and make copies of things you like or find interesting.
Go into a few different tatto parlours and have a look at the art books they have in the shop. Usually most books show artwork by one particular artist each. If you find one you like the style of, ask to make an appointment with this person for a consultation. This should be FREE!
Talk to the artist about yourself and the things you like, show him your list and the copies of images you made and also about the things he/she has drawn/tattoed. Check out what tattoos they have as well (don't get tattooed by someone who has none, or wont show you them). Get some rough ideas on paper and the artist should go away and come up with a few designs for you. Again this should be FREE!
If you feel comfortable with the artist, meet up to see what they've drawn for you. If you see one you like and that you feel is about YOU, then pick it, and start to discuss any changes you might like, size and cost. Also find out how long it's lkely to take and if you'll need more than one session.
If after all this youu're happy with the design and happy to let the person tattoo you, go ahead and get it done.
It's a good way to do it as you get a custom design that no one else will have, and it will be about you!

I have a butterfly on my lowerback. The tattoo artist was really friendly and helpful. I wanted to have "the saint" tattooed, but he recommended against it, as he said it was a tattoo for old men - for which I am grateful. Take your time, you are paying for a service - so ask as many questions as you want. Another option is to get a couple of henna tatoo's to see if you like the look and positioning of your chosen design. I had a massive chinese dragon done up the side of my calf - I loved it, but would be impractical for me.
GOOD LUCK!

Hey there. First off is this your first tattoo? I have tattoos myself and you can't let someone pick something out for you. It needs to be something personal that you love. It is very permanent. :) Just don't rush into it. Take your time, visit some tattoo shops, check out some web sites. When you see the tattoo for you, you will know. :)

It all depends on your own personal likes and dislikes, but if i were to have one on my hip i would like a tribal pattern with colourful flowers. You know men who have the tribal patterns on the arms, a smaller version of that, but i would like it going from my hip round to my back. I would never get this done but i would think it would look great, i love tattoos :)

I have a tattoo on my belly, it's a japenese symbol that means 'passion'. I originally had it done as a temporary tattoo back in 1997, but I love it so much than when it started fading in 2001 I got it re-done permanently! Everyone told me not to get done because they said I would regret it, but I never ever have! I love it as much now as when it was first done! It's certainly a conversation starter!
Good luck choosing! :)

Don't rush into anything, you'll have it for life and besides tattoo's are more appreiciated by the person having them when they mean something and not just used as a fashion statement.

Look around the tattoo shops.
When I had mine done, I had all different ideas.... but when I got to the tattooist's I found only 1 that i liked.
So shop about...so to speak.

Go to a good tatoo artist and have a consultation. I too was undecided and my artist talked to me in length on my likes and dislikes and showed me numerous books and pictures. With his guidance and expertise, I found I had a strong liking for art deco designs. Thanks to him, I now have a beautiful tat that probably no one else has. It's like a permanent piece of jewlery.
