Sorry Bmac but you are wrong about the spincter as it as alot to do with it . If the doctors did noy find an ulcer or a hiatal hernia, then the only possible answer is that her spincter is weak.

The spincter closes off the stomach from the oseophagus keeping the stomach acid that breaks down the food from flowing back into the oseophagus. When the spincter gets weakened or is blocked by something then acid flows back into the oseophagus which is known as acid reflux.
I have a small hiatal hernia which causes my acid reflux. I take protonix or prevacid once a day, it acts as an inhibitor an blocks too much stomach acid from being secreated. There are certain food that helps to make the reflux worse, so I try to stay away from them as asked by my doctor.

Some of those things to avoid are;
--- tomato based products, all mints, limit fatty foods, too much caffiene, sodas, spicy foods, onions, citrus fruits
--- sit up after eating, no smoking, elevate head as you sleep, eat small meals, avoid tight fitting close on abdomen, take time to relax, stress makes symptoms worse.
--- if over weight, lose weight and exercise helps

In our cases all of the above does the same thing. They relaxes the spincter and causes the backflow of acid. if you change your lifestyle the condition will get better and help to prevent your stomach wall from getting damaged. And yes drink more water.

Your story sounds EXACTLY like what I went through for years.

Then about two years ago I developed what I thought was a Wheat allergy (I had constriction of my throat (like anaphylaxis) and more mild coughing) when I ate bread.

I had had acid reflux for probably 8 to 10 years.

Well after much analysis I discovered that it isn't the bread it is YEAST. ANYTHING WITH YEAST, Yeast is a fungus and now I cannot eat uncooked mushrooms and some vitamin supplements have wheat and or yeast as a filler.

So by not eating much bread (I can eat breads made with baking power or baking soda) Just not yeast raised bread.

BY STOPPING ALL OF THE YEAST RAISED BREAD. THE ACID REFLUX STOPPED COMPLETELY. That alone made it worth while.

Weirdly enough I found that lemon juice in water worked well for the stomach distress. If I were you I would cut my diet in half and for a week eliminate yeast raised wheat products and see if it helps.

We have been drinking Aloe Vera Juice and it seems to be helpful for many things and people say it is good for digestive problems. It might be worth giving it a try. We have also been doing colon cleansing and that is after doing a lot of research on CANDIDA ALBICANS a yeast infection that takes over your bowels and causes tons of symptions. Google this and read.

Ask your Dr to check your thyroid. Mine was under acting and the meds have helped the throat constriction problem also.

My problems have been 98% solved. So it was worth the research and changes in diet.

Good Luck.

chronic acid reflux can be very bothersome and dangerous as well, so i'm glad you have been following up with the medications and tests (i'm sure you have had a barium swallow study and/or endoscopy)
GERD (gastro-esophagealreflux disease) can indeed be caused by a weak of dysfunctional Lower Esophageal Sphincter (maybe 'bmac' is thinking of a different sphincter?) or hiatal hernia and can lead to esophagitis or worse .

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI's) are the main treatment, these inhibit the molecular pump that produces the stomach acid, lowering the acidity and not only helping with symptoms but protecting your stomach lining (ie ulcer) and your esophagus (esophagitis, Barrot's esophagus, cancer)
Pantoprazole (protonix) is one of these, as is Omeprazole which is Prilosec (as 'Chris B' suggested)
I don't think water would be a great help, but it won't hurt to try it and see, (you should absolutely not stop your Protonix in favor of water!)
Milk is not a good idea, although it does coat the stomach, the calcium in milk can worsen acid, (which is why you don't see MD's prescribing TUMS for chronic heartburn)

i would absolutely see a GI specialist if you haven't already done so.
Good luck

I'm a medical researcher. It is widely agreed among physicians and medical paraprofessionals, that initial diagnosis, mostly by using a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is necessary to ensure the most effective and quick treatment for this condition. Approx 70% of the acid reflux diagnostics that are based on the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Since acid reflux, also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can cause patients a great deal of discomfort and result in severe complications, it is highly important to know how to identify its symptoms in order to quickly diagnose and treat it.

If you know you have acid reflux you can try this natural program http://acidreflux.toptips.org

I stopped eating onions for a while & I went to a dinner where they passed out salads with some onions in them. I felt such a burning from eating that peice of onion. It was horrible. That was about a year ago. So I had something recently & again if felt like it was burning a hole through me. It was worst that in one place it was horrible all over. If I would eat foods that I wasn't bothered by I would eat a salad with no dressing & sunflower seeds & fruit & vegetables. I have found I have a problem with everything it seems. I wonder if it is a build up of not eating well for years or if I need to examine my thoughts about all of this. What if we are getting this way because we have so many beliefs about what we eat that we just manifest what we believe. Even children have problems with foods because of the beliefs of family around them. I was eating an apple with peanut better thinking it was healthy & I stopped for a few days & when I went back I felt dealthy ill. I stopped that & have improved my health by not eating apples & peanut better. I did buy a bag of organic apples & was fine eating them.

You sphincter has NOTHING to do with your acid reflux. Acid reflux can be from a hiatus hernia or irritation from the esophagus.

If you have an obese stomach it could be pushing up your hiatus hernia. Lose some weight. You also need to see a specialist.
