Chill the onion in the refrigerator for one hour before cutting. Also, you can cut them under cold running water to prevent tearing.

There is a gas inside onions that cause the actual tearing up when you cut through the onion and release it, and placing a lit candle nearby where you're cutting can help to burn off that gas before it even reaches your eyes. Cutting under running water can be difficult and dangerous if you can't really see where you're cutting, so the candle could be a great alternative.

I have tried the cold onion thing. It never did anything for me...I cried anyways.
Try this...cut the onion in half. Keep the cut side down on the cutting board and slice it, mince it...etc. But always remember to try and keep that cut side down. This has minimized the onion juice or gas or whatever it is from getting into my eyes.

water the onion before getting started, water the knife eventually while cutting the onion and slice it quick. There is no possible way not to tear; because the fume that onion spells will not stop. You can lower it by throwing it in the refrigerator but it wont stop so you gotta do it quick

Keep the outer skin on the onion as long as possible.
This is an attempt to contain the onion in some part to reduce the surface exposed to the air. The reduction in onion mist is minimal at best since all that sliced onion flesh is exposed to the air.

The soaking in the water works but it will also get rid of all the nutritional benefits of the onions. What works very well is breathing trough your mouth while chopping and avoid breathing trough your nose. As well you can try to chew a piece of bread while chopping. The starch in the bread will prevent you from crying as well.

FYI; out of smelling, breathing and eye you will need 2 to make you cry. If you tie your eyes and hold your nose closed you will not taste the difference between and onion and an apple

Make sure the onion is cold. Refrigerate your onions.

You will never cry again, and can chop a whole large onion or more before you even have one tear.

My mom told me to keep a teaspoon of water in your mouth when you cut up an onion. I guarantee you no tears.

the best thing is peel off the skin of the onion and keep it in the fridge before you cut it.

I buy only "sweet onions" and I store them in my fridge. I haven't cried over an onion in years, but they would be worth it!!!
