the batteries need to be replaced on your phone. it goes into the answering machine because the batteries are to weak to send a signal to the base saying you picked up the phone.

I agree with George 2. It sounds like you need to replace the battery pack.

A really great place to purchase batteries is eBay (if you eBay).
Open the back panel & get the number off the battery pack and then just enter that number on the Ebay search engine, and hopefully, you'll receive some hits. Be sure to pay attention to the shipping costs, as that is often a major ripoff, especially where things like batteries are concerned! I've purchased cordless phone and cell phone batteries there and have gotten them for literally a FRACTION of the cost I would have paid elsewhere.

Deactivate ur answering machine so u can receive the call & talk to the caller.
*Are u using forwarding call service? If yes, maybe u forgot to disable it also, hence, u can hear the ring of the phone (mother phone/landline) but u cannot answer it. Instead, u can answer that call right thru the other phone (like cell phone) to answer that call.
**Im using this service sometimes when im out of the house so i can receive the calls on my landline right thru my cell phone (forwarding service). When i arrive home, i must disable the service so i could pick up the phone itself.
