This sounds normal, if your concerned call your Dentist. I have observed this with a tooth I had pulled. It was normal. If it get infected you will know. Now, one problem we can have is an "Impacted Socket". This is when food get packed in the hole from eating, this why they probably told you to chew on the other side. It not pack without pressure. So, if you not chewing on that side there usually not enough food mass to pack.
The link is the "Mayo Clinic" it explain better than me. It talk of a Wisdom Tooth but much of the information should be relevant for any tooth. As you read you will see continue at the end, it scroll you through the info in the top red lettered box. Also you see related links, the first is Dry Socket.

I had the same experience a few years ago. When a tooth is pulled out there is a small wound that needs to heal, so a little film is fine. You gums have been bruised from the tooth being pulled, so a little color change for a while isn't so bad.You only need to go see you dentist when you have a nasty taste in you mouth ( which I had), because than it may be infected and they'll give something for that.

The gum is healing. Yes, it's normal. Salt water is good. But never use anything with hydrogen peroxide. That will destroy the new tissue growth.

that's going to bypass away any time between some days and some weeks. believe me. that's coming from someone who has had way too many teeth pulled. countless my teeth did not come out on there own and so i have had probable 15 pulled complete. It sucks! besides, basically wait a lengthy time period and it will be decrease back to standard.

just make sure you don't stick your tongue in the hole and feel around. that will slow the healing and lead to infection, and what they call a dry socket. very painful, I've heard
