When Gordon B. Hinkley passes on and you have a new prophet who has a new revelation from God saying that polygamy was to be practiced again, would you accept this and stay in the church or would you leave and why? Women how would you feel knowing that your husband must now pick another wife or two? Men of the church how would you feel about this?

I'm not saying this will happen - it's just a what if question

Well, IF there was a new revelation...which I HIGHLY doubt would happen...then yes, I would follow what the prophet said.
Let me share with you a couple things:
D&C 1: 38
38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.
***I believe the prophet speaks for the Lord.

Quote from Wilford Woodruff, 4th President of the Church
The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the programme. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty.
It matters not who lives or who dies, or who is called to lead this Church, they have got to lead it by the inspiration of Almighty God. If they do not do it that way, they cannot do it at all. . . .
****I believe if and when the prophet gives a revealtion, we are supposed to receive it.

Also, you have to remember, once polygamy was started, it was only prcticed by very very few members, there was no commandment saying EVERY MALE should have multiple wives. And, there were reasons for it, I don't question why. Who am I to question a commandment from the Lord? If the prophet said tomorrow - it has been revealed to quit drinking milk, I would do it. It's called being obedient.
Also, as a wife, I am sure I would have to go to my Heavenly Father in prayer and if there was need of my husband having another wife, then I would accept that. Yes, it would probably be hard, aren't most of the commandments hard to live by? It's all about being obedient and doing what the Lord asks.

People left the Church when plural marriage was first given as a principal. Even Brigham Young wrote that he wished he was dead. When Wilford Woodruff issued the manefesto, people left the Church. What people forgot was the Prophet is more than the prophet of a single element of doctrine. The Gospel is the Gospel with or without plural marriage.

Polygamy as practiced today by some groups is fundamentally flawed. People like Jeffs have to drive out the young men to keep the system going. 150 years ago this wasn't the case.

To answer your hypothetical question, if Heavenly Father wanted this changed, it wouldn't take a new Prophet to do it. If the Prophet announced this my wife has already said she is all in favor of having someone to share the housework.

Unless polygamy was legalized, then the new prophet would not say it should be practiced again. You know better than me (since I'm not Mormon) but I do know that the church believes 100% in obeying the law. I don't think God would tell the prophet to tell the church people to do something illegal. If that were to happen though, I would NEVER consider joining the church and I would seriously question my family members who are Mormon as to what they are doing. I really don't want anymore aunts in my family since I have a hard time keeping up with all the birthday cards as is.

Well, I agree with the other LDS members on here, that it probably would not happen, but if it did, then of course, I would adhere to the revelation as it is clear that the prophet will not lead us astray.

As a woman, of course, my feelings at this moment in time, would be that I would not want to enter into such a plural marriage enviornment as it is wrong currently. I think it would be extremely difficult for me to deal with it if it were in the situation in 10-15 years if my husband had to take on an additional wife......but prayer would get me through if those were the commandments.

And on a silly note - of course - any extra help in the kitchen, housework, grocery shopping, shleping kids around, etc.....who could argue with that?

The next prophet will not, that is less likely than refrigerator running away and turning into cottage cheese, but if he did, I would follow his instructions. The prophets will not lead us astray... However considering that it is illegal that would require the church being moved out of the US, and that would be a major hassle... That would also seem to be in violation of the commandment "thou shalt not commit adultery", at least to me... just more reasons why he would not bring such a revelation...
