I spent 4 months in China in 2000. During that time, I've spoken openly to people about their government. The Chinese people know that their government filters their news, so they know the news is slanted. They are becoming more aware of world events through radio and the Internet. They compare that news with what their government tells them and they see the differences.

Overall, people share many commonalities no matter where they are from. They work hard and go about their daily business, they love their families/friends and like to laugh. They have no choice but to let the government do what it will. Chinese people feel the effects of communism when they apply for a visa to travel outside China. Travel outside China is restricted.

They can worship more freely than I thought. Christianity is practiced openly. There is, however, a political officer present to see that no subversive activity is taking place. But the sermons I heard were very similar to what I hear in the U.S.

In a nutshell, the Chinese want unbiased news, they want to speak more openly, the want to be able to vote for officials over the level of "mayor", they want more freedoms, but they live with what they have.

Well, it partly depends on which "chinese(sic) young people" you're referring to. Young Chinese people in Hong Kong generally loathe the reality of living in a country with a communist government.

On the other hand, China isn't really communist. One trip to Shanghai, Beijing or even Cheng Du will show you this. There is no interest any more in promoting the "proletariat", as there was in the old days. China has rediscovered the joys of getting rich and there are more millionaires (measured by their wealth in US Dollars), today in China, primarily along the Eastern seaboard, than ever before.

So I think a better question would be 'Do young people in China like the kind of government they have?', which I believe the answer to be a firm NO.

Good luck with this issue, we'll all be dealing with the reality of how Chinese young people really feel in the next 10-20 years.

Urm, I suppose it's Yes & No.

Yes because a few decades back China was a really poor country, and the gap between the rich and the poor is really big. Most of the rich people back then are usually successors of their rich ancestor, it's really hard for someone who is not rich to be rich. A lot of the poor people were taken advatange of.

No because China is starting to open-up for democracy. They believe it would be rather difficult for their country's economy and image to the world if they insisted on being a 100% communist country. After all, people that work harder should be somewhat rewarded.

If you have been raised in a communist country, that's all you know. Are they unhappy with their government? The poor are, yes! But so aren't we angry at times with our governments. They only know communism and have never had a real taste of democracy.

However - there are a number of young people in China who want democracy and have demonstrated. Such rebellion is met by being beaten, shot.. or.. being thrown in prison and dying there. Which is why you don't hear of too many protests now days.

The young chinese people don't really care. I asked them and they said I only want to live, have food, have fun, I don't care about the country's politics.
