Noone can be told what to do but that doesn't mean the benefits agency can't have their own rules on the issue. The rules should be that if you're unemployed and claiming benefits you are allowed to have one child. Everyone makes mistakes in life and getting pregnant once whilst on benefits can happen... noones perfect. The rules should then be clear that any further children will not be eligible for additonal benefits, so that parents know the rules. If they then choose to its up to them but their life will be alot harder. If further pregnancies occur, then maybe the option to help financially if a termination is wanted should be an option (dependant on the persons view etc etc).
Benefits should be a last resort not an alternative, as some see them. I'd never claim unless I had to and certainly would have the basic intelligence to use contraception if I was. For god sake they give away free jonnies!!!!
Cue hippy, liberal, guardian readers to say these people son't exist and we shouldn't be so nasty. Everyone who lives in the real world knows they exist and will bleed the nation dry in no time.

My darling you obviously do not have more than one child if any yourself!!!
I am married to a heavily employed man with two children and I cant cope, No one who is going to got an extra £11 a week for a child is going to consider it a good idea. That is all you get on benefit for additional children. A top up to your money of £11. How much do nappies, or formula cost? What about clothes, cots buggies? Do you live in a strange bigoted fantasy world?
My mother was married but divorced, and she brought up two children on benefit. We both went to university, have not had children as teenagers, have never engaged in drugs or crime.
The benefit stigma is created by the government, to brain wash workers into believing superiority over others to keep them from noticing how much cash they are personally taking to line their own pockets.
Perhaps the main difference between those on benefit and workers are that those on benefit can spell the word!!!

How much benefit do you get from having a child? Raising a child is not just about money, it involves endless sacrifices, heartache (when they are in hospital or they are out there and you know how dangerous the world is), hard work to ensure that they have a good start in life etc. So I really don’t get it when people say people have kids just for the sake of benefits.
And if there really are such people, then such children should be taken off them because they are not fit to be called parents.

yes definately! if people are on benefits why do you keep having more children? cos the more children they have the more money they get and then the lazy sods end up getting more money than people who work 40+ hours a week. i think the government should only give money for 2 children at most.

I think that this would be difficult to justify. I think that to get benefits you need to contribute to society in some way, like voluntary work.
I think it is unhealthy for someone not to be an active member of the society they live in and if you recieve financial support you should offer a service in return.

Yes!!! If you can't pay to bring up your own child then you shouldn't be having them!! It realy infuriates me when you hear of poeple getting free houses, ridiculous amounts of benefit, and then still complain they do not have enough money! Well if they gave up the cigs then maybe they would have enough money to support their children on the bebefits they do get!!

it irks me when I see these women getting preggo and then confessing to the world it's because their welfare check gets bigger! Sure you can't tell them they can't have more kids, but you can surely put a limit on the amount of kids welfare will cover! I would think no more than 2-3

No. You can't tell someone how many children they can have. You can however take the can of Stella out of their hands, kick them out of bed and get them down to the job centre.
