I would like to buy a reliable pick-up truck (used). Chevy's are out, I have had many in fact that's all I've owned. Anybody got any suggestions? It will need to be my primary ride. Ford or Dodge? How many miles can I anticipate on the life of one? And does anybody know how well 2-wheel drive get around in the snow? I always had locking differential or 4-wheel drive on the Chevy's. Thanks.

Look for a 1998 - 2004 Dodge Dakota.
All 2 wheel drive pick up trucks suck in the snow unless you fill the bed with grave (to be used when stuck). They are just too light in the rear end.

With the Dodge Dakota try to get the 4.7 liter V-8. Good on gas and more then enough power. Rated extremely high with customer comments and plenty of them on the road. If you go with this truck stay away from the 3.9 liter V-6 if you go with a 4X4, just not enough power, I know.

Good luck and happy truck hunting

That sucks you don't want another Chevy. I've had two Silverados and both have been amazing. I have 226,500 miles on my 01's original motor and it still runs awesome, getting 21 mpg highway, and very very energetic. lol My 94 has over 300,000 on the original motor and tranny.
If I were to go outside of GM, I'd probably go for a Dodge, cause that is my second choice, for a gas engine. I'd definitly go Ford for diesal.
You could also look into the Tritan or Tundra if you'd like options. I don't know much about the two, but I hear that they are decent. As far as life expectancy, that depends mainly on you. If you take care of your ride, it will last. Keep up on the fluid changes, and check the levels regularly, even on a newer one. Any vehicle can last a long time, or crap out soon.
Good luck!

If you look at a Dodge, stay far away from an automatic. Chrysler Corp hasn't been able to make a reliable automatic yet.
If Ford is your choice, then look at the Ranger. I reccomend an extended cab model. Try to get a 4.0L the 3.0L is a little underpowered. But I will say that the Ranger Extend cab is one of the safest trucks ever made.
I had a 2000 model and was T-boned by a woman gong 60 mph, her little honda scooped under the truck and flipped it over. The interior was undamaged. I was even able to open and close all three doors after it was righted. Can't say enough good things about the safety features.

I found a 1995 Ranger long bed, hard, locking tonneau, regular cab pickup in 4 cyclinder with a 5 speed transmission. Like it a lot. Get great gas mileage, long bed is good hauler, engine has enough power for me and the manual trannie allows me to control the power better. Not good in snow but not real bad either. Its not going in heavy snow but I put 500 pounds of bag potting soil in the back, keep snow tires on the back and it gets around for me. I have an SUV so I did not need 4WD truck for snow only. I use my truck about 85% of the time and appreciate what it does.

The only Ford I would get is a 4 cylinder Ranger. They will last if you change timing belts. The V6 are junk. Don't get a automatic, nobody but Toyota can build a good Automatic.

Toyota Tacoma, cannot be beat. You get what you pay for though, be prepared to spend considerably more for a Toyota than a domestic.
